Page 12 The INDEPENDENT, January 20, 2011 Banks School Board hears that donated computers are in use by Dalan Lee The Banks School Board meeting on January 12 and covered many items regarding the new semester, and includ- ed three annual presentations – district finances, insurance coverage and education servic- es. Administrators also report- ed that state testing was under- way. The recent school district au- dit results were presented to the board. The auditors, who worked with Banks School Dis- tricts Business Manager Simon Levear, found no major dis- crepancies within the district but did find over-expenditures. The board recommended a second opinion regarding the results. Another presentation ex- plained the insurance policy used by the district, detailing the dollar amounts of insurance for items from single students to catastrophe coverage on the entire district. Banks School District Tech- nology Director Mike O’Reilly told the board that 50 percent of the many computers recently donated by Nike, are up and running, and being used largely in the elementary school. Ele- mentary School Principal Bob Huston reported, “These com- puters give students a lot of pride.” Huston added that state testing is being met but there are some problems due to an antiquated math curriculum and that he was proud of his staff for working together on this matter to bring about the best testing outcome. Junior High Principal Mark Everett and High School Princi- pal Jim Smith discussed moti- vating students and doing classroom check-ins to remind everyone of what is expected now that winter vacation is over. Both principals expressed appreciation to maintenance man “Skip” for his undoubted hard work on the old heating system in the schools. After one minute, the music cues the participant to change stations on the circuit, and she moves to an area be- tween machines to do Zumba moves, which tone and sculpt the body while burning fat. A li- censed Zumba instructor from the Zumba Instructor Network (ZIN) teaches simple, modified Zumba moves from the center of the circuit. Homeless project on January 28 Washington County Project Homeless Connect will be held at Sonrise Church in Hillsboro on January 28. The only Pro- ject Homeless Connect held in the tri-county region, Washing- ton County Project Homeless Connect is in its fifth year and is an important strategy in the County’s 10-Year Plan to End Homelessness. The mission of Project Homeless Connect is to bring communities together to create and promote tangible solutions that remedy the homelessness of their neighbors. The event is a one-day, one-stop project that is designed to connect in- dividuals in need to services and supports, as well as mobi- lize the community around this growing issue.
