He has an associates degree in parale- gal and as an electronic service technician. He and his wife, Linda, have lived in Vernonia for over 20 years and raised their three children here. He was the chief petitioner for the local dialing exchange in the 1990s that made local calling (rather than long distance) to Portland, Hillsboro, even Scap- poose. Steve Johnson has lived in Vernonia since just after the flood of 1996. He is a Vocation- al Rehabilitation Counselor for the State of Oregon. He worked at Tualatin Val- ley Mental Health for 11 years before working for the state. Johnson is divorced and his grown son lives in Eugene. Marilyn Nicks is a local busi- ness owner (Cornerstone Natu- rals) who moved here from Chapman in 1998. Her father worked at the O-A Mill before it closed. She is the president of the local Kiwanis, a Ford Fami- ly Foundation leadership pro- gram graduate, served on the city’s Budget Committee this year, is the secretary for the Economic Development Com- mittee, is a member of CPAC, the Chamber of Commerce, on the Strategic Planning Commit- tee and is President of the Downtown Association. Nicks and her husband, Dennis, have seven children. Ernie Smith works as a truck See Candidate on page 22 Obituary DELBERT ELMER HARRISON Delbert Elmer Harrison, 73, Vernonia, died October 4, 2010. A memorial service will be held Sunday, October 10, at 2:00 p.m. at the Vernonia Community Church. Private committal serv- ice will be held later. A full obituary will be printed in the next issue. Duyck & VanDeHey Funeral Home is in charge of arrange- ments. CECIL JOHN HERB Cecil John Herb, 80, Roy, died September 13, 2010. A funeral mass was held September 16 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Roy. Vault interment took place at the St. Francis Catholic Church Cemetery. Mr. Herb was born August 31, 1930, on the family farm in Roy, to Henry and Jennie (Nielson) Herb. He was raised in Roy and graduated from Banks High School in 1948. In 1952, he married LaVonne Caldwell. They made their home in Banks until moving to a farm on Cedar Canyon Rd., outside of Banks, in 1963. He worked for ODOT for 13 years before be- coming a farmer. He retired from farming in 1995. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and gardening, and col- lected horns and hats. He was an accomplished wine and sausage maker and liked to can. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Keith and Richard; and a grandson. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gordon of Forest Grove and Matthew of Roy; three daughters, Vickie Duyck of Greenville, Janet Peters, and Sharon Cox, both of Forest Grove; two brothers, Fred and Ken; two sisters, Catherine Sohler and Jan Jansen; 30 grandchildren; and 14 great- grandchildren. Morrell, 94, Salesville, Arkansas, died September 21, 2010. Services were private. Mrs. Morrell was born January 20, 1916, in Vernonia. In 1936, she married Floyd T. Morrell. She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include two sons, Tom of Salesville, and Le Roy of The Dalles; one brother, Noah Truhurne of Rockaway; six grandchildren and three great- grandchildren. Remembrances are suggest- ed to a charity of choice. Roller Funeral Home in Moun- tain Home, Arkansas was in charge of arrangements. RUTH VEALEY Ruth Vealey, 84, Hillsboro, died September 14, 2010. Pri- vate interment has been held. Mrs. Vealey was born March 15, 1926, in Vernonia, to Fritz and Betty Hausler. She graduat- ed from Vernonia High School in 1943. She married William Harry “Bill” Vealey. He adopted her baby son from a previous mar- riage. They made their home in Vernonia until they moved to Hillsboro in 2007. She enjoyed playing pinochle and watching television. She was preceded in death by Ruth Vealey her husband; and a brother, Fritz Hausler. Survivors include a son, William J. Vealey of Cornelius; one grandson and one great- grandson. Remembrances are suggest- ed to the American Cancer Soci- ety.
