The INDEPENDENT, May 6, 2010 Page 21 Letters From page 20 enues aren’t enough to meet the needs for services, and the commissioners will need to make some tough decisions on how to make the most of what we have. We need a proven leader with the skills, knowledge, and passion to make a difference as our next county commis- sioner and Shawna Sykes is that leader. Shawna grew up in rural Columbia County and she and her husband, Darryl, are raising their family here. She is involved in business, communi- ty, and school activities, and when Shawna sees an oppor- tunity to help, she steps up to the plate and helps get things done. Shawna cares about her neighbors in the community. She is committed to doing what’s right for our residents, even when it’s not the easy thing to do. I’ve known Shawna for over 10 years and I know that by electing Shawna, we’re not electing a figurehead. As our next commissioner, Shaw- na will be working hard to make Columbia County a better place. Join me in voting for Shawna Sykes for Columbia County Commissioner, position 2. Debra McVae Scappoose We need more community leaders like her. Shawna Sykes has my vote for Columbia County Commissioner. Tammy Belwood Warren Sykes is responsive Embrace the beauty to community needs of our surroundings To the Editor: When our family and friends decided to organize toward safety enhancements on Cor- nelius Pass Road, I asked around for assistance and ad- vice. A friend of mine worked with Shawna Sykes and asked her to serve as a facilitator at a large community meeting with elected officials from Multnom- ah, Washington, and Columbia Counties, as well as roadway maintenance staff and con- cerned citizens. Shawna happi- ly stepped up to help, made recommendations for people to invite, facilitated the meeting in a very professional manner, and helped our process get off to a successful start. Shawna cares about the community and what’s good for our citizens, and is responsive to our needs. To the Editor: What do you see when you go for your daily get away? Some call this a walk in the park. I call it my mind cleans- ing. If you walk with your head down all you see is cement, rocks, dirt, weeds, Winter’s dead flowers and a new crop of dandelions by the millions. Lift your head a little higher and you will see rose buds and all kinds of flowering shrubs awak- ening. A little higher raise your eyes; lilacs (white, orchid and deep purple), pink dogwood in all its glory and a myriad of oth- er blooming trees – for your eyes to drink in the pleasure of something we humans can’t control. Then again, look up higher. All of the grand old trees await your gaze. Have you ever studied the bark, the limbs, the branches? What are they reaching for? The open air, the sun, the clouds in the sky – be they white, blue, gray or black. The same thing you can’t see, only imagine. Freedom. From what? The same thing we down here below are looking for. Quiet, kindness, a place where you can hear happiness, joy and peace. Have a Nice Day. (Wasn’t it great to read something without a complaint or dig in it?) Jacqueline Ramsay Bits & Bites columnist Summer program in need of donations To the Editor: SOS – save our summer. We at Murphys have a pas- sion for taking care of the chil- dren in our community and our local Boys and Girls Club. We just got word that the Cornelius/Forest Grove Satel- lite Summer Program is in grave danger of being can- celed. For five years this pro- gram has given our Cornelius and Forest Grove children a safe, positive and productive place to spend their summer. These are 500 1st-6th graders! Without the program, a good number of these chil- dren will spend their days as latchkey kids – home alone waiting for their parents to re- turn home from work. What can we do? We can raise $10,000 in 2 weeks! That’s $20 per child. This combined with the fund- ing sources already in place, will protect our local kids and protect our local Boys and Girls Club Cornelius/Forest Grove Summer Program. This pledge drive can Save Our Summer! Email us your pledge to info@murphysfurniture.net – along with your address and phone number – and let’s show our commitment to our kids. Please pass along this mes- sage to anyone you can think of.
