The INDEPENDENT, June 18, 2009 Legion Post #119 elects new officers American Legion Post #119 of Vernonia held their last meeting, June 11, prior to their summer break. At this meeting new officers were elected: Ray Pelster, Commander; Roger Whitton, Vice-Commander; Tom Ramsey, Adjutant; and Andy Nebergall, Chaplain. The post thanked their out- going officers for their service: Rod Price, Commander; Don Bergerson, Vice-Commander; Les Forcier, Adjutant; and Ray Pelster, Chaplain. The post approved the do- nation of $500 to the 4th of July Fireworks. The next meeting is sched- uled for September 10 (2nd Thursday of the month) at the American Legion Building on Adams Ave. The time will be announced later this summer. Col. Co. Rider has a new route Columbia County Rider has announced the addition of a morning and evening Fixed Route Service from Vernonia to Tri-Met’s Willow Creek Transit Center in Hillsboro/Beaverton, via PCC’s Rock Creek Cam- pus. This service will begin July 1, 2009. Your Help is Needed! Boosters plan to feed you at 4th of July festivities The Boosters will be serving up hamburgers and hot dogs at the Snack Shack behind Ver- nonia High School from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on the 4th of July. Your support of the Boosters will be appreciated! This year, Boosters have helped both the band and sen- ior class go to Disneyland, gave four $500 scholarships to seniors, helped fund the 4th of July fireworks, and all little guy/gal sports are under the Boosters. This is just a few of the programs that the Boosters support. Help us keep supporting our kids and our community. Hope to see you there! C-Z Trail clean-up event is scheduled Members of the Ford Family Foundation’s South Columbia County Leadership class will be doing a clean up and landscap- ing event on Saturday, June 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on the Crown Zellerbach Trail near Scappoose, followed by a project wrap-up celebration. Gloves and refreshments will be provided. Service clubs, Girl and Boy Scout groups, 4-H groups, Casey Weller and Travis Field announced a wedding date. Weller, Fields set a wedding date Casey Weller and Travis Fields, both of Baker City, have announced their engagement. Their wedding is set for August 22, in Bend. The bride-to-be is the daughter of John and Vicki Weller, of Mist. She graduated from Vernonia High School in 2000 and from Central Oregon Community College in 2006. She is currently a registered nurse in the surgery unit at St. Elizabeth Health Services in Baker City. The groom-elect is the son of Jeff and Judy Fields of Bend. He graduated from Bend High School in 2001, then studied fire science and EMS at Cen- tral Oregon Community Col- lege, graduating in 2004. He is a firefighter and paramedic with the Baker City Fire Depart- ment. community members and any- one interested in helping are welcome to participate.
