The INDEPENDENT, March 5, 2009 Page 21 Obituary GLORIA CONGER ATCHLEY Gloria Conger Atchley, 68, Vernon- ia, died March 2, 2009. A funeral serv- ice was held today at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Vernonia. Interment followed at Vernonia Memorial Pioneer Ceme- tery. Mrs. Atchley was born December 29, 1940, in Tremonton, Utah, to Arthur Bule and Beth Crestine (Wankier) Con- ger. She was raised in Utah. She at- tended a business college in California where she earned a bookkeeping cer- tificate. In 1972, she married W. Keith Atch- ley. They made their home in Utah, Washington, then Portland before mov- ing to Vernonia in 1985. She owned and operated Gloria’s Spar-Tree Restaurant for about 19 years and was camp cook for the Northwest Regional Outdoor School for about 10 years. Survivors include her husband; two sons, George Espinoza of Portland, and Paul Baumgardner of Caldwell, Idaho; four daughters, Shauna Rau of Vernonia, Dawn Williams of Vancouver, Wash., Marie Espinoza of Washougal, Wash., and Kammy Johnson of Rich- mond, Utah; a brother, David Conger of Smithfield, Utah; a sister, Vickie Lloyd of Buena Vista, Colorado; 26 grandchil- dren; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. HAROLD LEONARD BERGERSON Harold Leonard Bergerson, 93, Seaside, died February 20, 2009. A memorial service was held February 24 in Seaside. Private interment has taken place in Vernonia Memorial Cemetery. Mr. Bergerson was born September 4, 1915, in Vernonia, to Charles and Emma (Peterson) Bergerson. He was raised in Vernonia. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. In 1941, he married Louise French. They made their home in Vernonia. He was a logger and farmer. They moved to Seaside in 2004. He was preceded in death by his wife. Survivors include his son, Bill of Gearhart; his daughter, Ann Carson; three grandchildren; six great-grand- children; nieces and nephews. Remembrances are suggested to a charity of choice. Hughes-Ransom Cremation & Mor- tuaries in Seaside was in charge of arrangements. RUBY ERNESTINE CLARK Ruby Ernestine Clark, 88, Hillsboro, died February 22, 2009. A celebration of life will be held at the Rood Bridge River House in Hillsboro on Sunday, was in charge of arrangements. FRED ROY FULMER III and one great-great-grandchild. KELLY ANN PENDELL Ruby Ernestine Clark March 15, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. A pri- vate family service will be held at a lat- er time at the Vernonia Cemetery. Mrs. Clark was born February 28, 1920, in Burley, Idaho. Her maiden name was Condit. She was raised in Vernonia where she graduated from Vernonia High School in 1938. She continued her education in California and Colorado before returning to Ver- nonia. In 1941, she married Kyle Clark. She worked in the shipyards during World War II. After the war, they made their home in Hillsboro. She was an ed- ucational assistant in the Hillsboro ele- mentary district for many years. Survivors include her husband; one son, Dan Clark of Lake Oswego; two daughters, Linda Gisel of Philomath and Kim Jones of Beaverton; one brother, Ralph Condit; one sister, Lillian Buchanan; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Fir Lawn Mortuary in Hillsboro is in charge of arrangements. GLADYS MARIE DUPUIS Gladys Marie DuPuis, 90, Birken- feld, died February 18, 2009. A funeral service was held February 28 in Clatskanie, followed by interment at the Fishhawk Cemetery. Mrs. DuPuis was born May 6, 1918, in Bay City, to William and Edith Provost. She was raised in Bay City. In 1944, she married Robert “Bob” DuPuis. They made their home on a farm near Birkenfeld. In 1959, they moved to another farm in Birkenfeld. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Everett, Earl and David Provost. Survivors include her husband; one son, William “Bill” DuPuis of Boring; one daughter, Cathy Moran of Rainier; three grandchildren; two great-grand- children; nieces and nephews. Remembrances are suggested to the Mist-Birkenfeld Rural Fire Depart- ment, or Community Home Health and Hospice in Longview. Groulx Family Mortuary in Rainier Fred Roy Fulmer III, 61, Vernonia, died February 19, 2009. A celebration of life was held February 24 at the Ver- nonia Golf Course with Mr. Pat Knight officiating. Mr. Fulmer was born July 5, 1947, in Seattle, Washington, to Fred R. Fulmer, Jr. and Eva (Ostrand) Fulmer. He was raised in Seattle. He attended Seattle University and later Clark College in Vancouver, Wash. He managed the Seaside Golf Course for 17 years, then moved to Vernonia in 1986, where he managed the family-owned Vernonia Golf Course until his death. Survivors include six children; Dawn M. Fulmer of Tacoma, Wash., Tamara L. Fulmer, Fred R. Fulmer, IV, Robert R. Zavales, Nick W. Zavales, and Jon M. Mulleda, all of Vernonia; a brother, Wayne of Seaside; a sister, Vickie Wolf- gram of Seaside; six grandchildren; his companion, Yvonne M. Koslowsky of Portland; his companion’s daughter, Kristin Koslowsky of Portland; nieces and nephews. Remembrances are suggested to the Fred R. TRESA “PAT” HERB Tresa “Pat” Herb, 95, Forest Grove, died February 16, 2009. Services have been held. Mrs. Herb was born January 14, 1914, in Banks, to Franz Godfried and Magdelana (Von Hospenthal) Dober. She was raised in the Cedar Canyon area near Banks. In 1936, she married John “Ferd” Herb. They made their home in Forest Grove before moving to their farm in the Thatcher area of Forest Grove. She was preceded in death by her husband and 12 siblings. Survivors include two sons, Dennis of Forest Grove and David of Sam- mamish, Washington; two daughters, Sharon Knecht of Forest Grove and Karen McKinley of Gales Creek; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; Remember to “Spring Forward” ~ Daylight Savings Time begins March 8 for Sunset Bowling Alley in Ballard, Wash. He moved to Vernonia in 2005. He was preceded in death by his wife; a son, Douglas E.; six brothers; and two sisters. Survivors include his daughter, Cindy Naillon of Vernonia; a brother, Bob Rankin of Arizona; two grandsons; and four great-grandchildren. Remembrances are suggested to the American Cancer Society. Ser- vices are pending. A complete obituary will be printed when available. Kelly Ann Pendell, 51, Portland, died February 6, 2009. A celebration of life will be held April 5, at 2:00 p.m. at the Mist-Birkenfeld Fire Hall. Interment was at Mist Cemetery. Mrs. Pendell was born April 6, 1957, to Don and Etta Epling. She was raised in Portland. She graduated from LaSalle High School in 1975. In 1978, she married Mark Pendell. They made their home in Portland. She joined the U.S. Postal Service as a let- ter carrier in 1985. In 2000, she was elected vice president of the National Association of Portland Letter Carriers Branch 82. Survivors include her husband; a son, Keith Pendell of Rainier; a daugh- ter, Dawn of St. Helens; a sister, Kristi Lea Miller of Troutdale; and her parents of Mist. Remembrances are suggested to the Mist-Birkenfeld Rural Fire Depart- ment, or the Mist Cemetery Fund, or the Columbia County Animal Shelter, or to a charity of choice. GEORGE WALLACE RANKIN George Wallace Rankin, 79, Ver- nonia, died February 13, 2009. A cele- bration of life will be held March 7, at 2:00 p.m., at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Vernonia. Mr. Rankin was born August 13, 1929, in Blackwell, Oklahoma, to William Penn and Pansy Oleta (Wenchell) Rankin. The family moved to Los Angeles, California, when he was 12 years old. He graduated from Burbank High School in 1948. In 1952, he married Juanita Ann O’Conner. They made their home in the Seattle, Washington, area from 1954 to 2005. He was a master carpenter who built cabinets. After retiring, he worked LOREN HENRY WATERS Loren Henry Waters, 52, Forest Grove, died February 22, 2009. A pri- vate family service will be held with in- terment at a later date. Mr. Waters was born May 30, 1956, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to Donald Glesty and Shirley May (Anderson) Waters. When he was young the family moved to San Diego, California, where he was raised. In 1987, he met his companion, Ter- ry L. Lowary. They made their home in San Diego before moving to Seaside in 1996 and to Forest Grove in 2006. He worked as an automotive mechanic. Most recently, he worked for All Star Dealer in Forest Grove. Survivors include his companion; three sons, Richard Lowary Waters of Hillsboro, Steven Smith of Astoria, and Loren Henry Waters, Jr. of Seaside; three daughters, Evva Smith of Beaver- ton, Annie Waters and Ashley Waters, both of Forest Grove; his father of Ver- nonia; two brothers, Sam of Vernonia and Donny of Forest Grove; four sis- ters, Susan VanKeuren of Gresham, Shawna Smith of San Diego, Calif., Doris Forbes of Buffalo, New York, and Hazel Uren; and one grandson.
