The INDEPENDENT, February 5, 2009 Page 7 Community Theme for next Jamboree worth $50 Do you have a great idea for the theme of the 53rd Vernonia Friendship Jamboree? Submit your theme ideas by April 1 to info@vernoniachamber.org or mail to Jamboree, 1001 Bridge St., Vernonia OR 97064. The winner of the theme contest will receive a $50 prize. The Jamboree committee is seeking volunteers to serve as President, Vice-president, Sec- retary and committee positions for garbage, advertising, signs and t-shirts. Jamboree will be on August 7, 8, and 9 this year. Volunteers are encouraged to attend the next Jamboree meeting, February 12, at 7:00 p.m. at the Vernonia Communi- ty Learning Center on Bridge St. Amateur radio classes set to start soon If you are interested in be- coming an amateur radio oper- ator there will be Saturday classes starting February 21 and ending March 28, at 7:00 p.m. at the Vernonia Fire Hall. There is no cost for the class. The ARRL fee for the test exam is $15, payable when you take the test. Some Technician Class Study manuals should be on hand for purchase at cost. The Vernonia Emergency Radio Association (VERA) and Vernonia Amateur Radio Klub (VARK) hold meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at Mariolino’s at 7:00 p.m. You do not need to be a radio oper- ator to attend. He weighed 7 pounds, 13 ounces and was 21 inches long. He has joined his big broth- er, Ethan, at the family home. Grandparents are Gary and Patti Davis of Vernonia, and Dave and Sue Rodweller of Carollton, Ohio. Great-grandparents are Lu- cile Gilmour of Vernonia, and Elmer and Emily Perantoni of St. Augustine, Florida. Children’s commission seeks members The Columbia County Com- mission on Children and Fami- lies is seeking applications for membership. This 20 member volunteer commission is advi- sory to the Board of County Commissioners and makes recommendations regarding expenditure of funds for local programs and services for chil- dren and families. Members also plan and take part in activ- ities supporting the healthy de- velopment of children, families and communities. Learn to graft trees plus get cuttings The Oregon State University Extension Service office in St. Helens will hold their annual grafting workshop on Saturday, February 14, from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Extension office in St. Helens. Space is limited, call 503-397-3462 for reserva- tions. Cost will be $15 and will include five dwarf apple root- stocks. If you have a favorite apple tree that you want to make “copies” of, take some 12” cuttings from last season’s growth (about pencil thick- ness), using the middle third of the shoots. Bundle and label the cuttings and place them in plastic bag and store them in the refrigerator until the work- shop. Free cuttings will be avail- able of several varieties. How did my super bowl Sunday go? Thanks to the flu bug, my husband got to eat my whole plate of lobster that I couldn’t seem to get down…as of this writing, I still don’t know who won! But, I know I am on a win- ning team working among all the action folks here at the cen- ter: It’s not too late to come in on our senior police academy be- ing held here every Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. Call my office for top- ic information. Also on Tuesdays, bring all your sewing projects, needle- work, quilting, repairs, etc.,etc., and join the ladies. ALL are welcome, the male gender, too! Now I know there are men out there that like to do that sort of thing…don’t be shy! And while you are here, bring a dollar and have one of Connie’s great maple bars. This is a new fundraiser for our center. And also, if you want to call ahead and purchase some for your friends and family or meetings, call Connie here and she will gladly crank up the oven. Don’t forget Community Ac- tion Team has a legal aid pro- gram for those qualifying sen- iors on certain topics; free le- gal aid for those of you needing some advice from local attor- neys who participate in this program. We are still taking newspa- pers, all papers collected get turned in for money toward cancer research. WHAT’S THAT AGAIN? Said the sales clerk to someone looking over some items in a department store, “If you see something that isn’t there, we probably have more in the back.” To that I say, if you are look- ing for something that isn’t here, stick around, it will proba- bly come in!
