With the release of the Ore-
gon Statehood postage stamp
on Wednesday, January 14,
2009, the United States Postal
Service has authorized a
unique special commemorative
postmark to be issued in every
community in Oregon to help
all state residents celebrate
150 years of statehood.
The postmark incorporates
an outline of the state’s bound-
ary, which will be used to frame
the entire Oregon Statehood
stamp image. All 326 Oregon
Post Offices are participating in
the event.
Each postmark will include
the city and ZIP Code informa-
tion for each participating Post
Office.
The postmark may be used
for mailing items on January
14, and will be available to col-
lectors for an additional 60
days at each Post Office.
Stamp collectors may contact
their local Post Office for de-
tails.
To further celebrate the is-
suance of the stamp and the
special postmark, several Post
Offices around the state are
hosting special local events on
January 14. The Vernonia Post
Office will host a celebration on
January 22 at 11:00 a.m. in
honor of the Sesquicentennial
stamp. Everyone is welcome
to come enjoy the guest speak-
ers, door prizes, and cake.

The Vernonia Community
Choir is ready to start practic-
ing for the annual Easter Musi-
cal Drama. Their concert this
year will be “Bow The Knee” by
songwriter Chris Machen.
“Bow The Knee” features 10
powerful new songs. The mov-
ing story culminates in the dra-
matic and joyful resurrection of
Christ.
The choir encourages all
singers to join. The production
also needs people who would
like to act, sew costumes, work
behind the scenes or help with
lights and video.
Come to the first practice,
Sunday, January 18, from 2:30
to 4:30 p.m. at the Vernonia
Grange, on the corner of North
Street and Washington Av-
enue. Future practices will take
place each Sunday. For more
information, call Lynda Cahill at
503-429-1161.

peace of
mind: In
my office I have some informa-
tion on a company that, free of
charge, will sign your loved one
up for daily automated calls to
make sure they are OK. Call
my office for this new service.
ALSO, call my office if you
would like me to share with you
or a senior loved one a FILE
OF LIFE magnetic medical file
to place on a refrigerator door.
It is a very handy piece of infor-
mation for emergency person-
nel to be able to access. Call
me at 503-429-9112.
SENIOR POLICE ACADE-
MY starts January 27, at 3:00

Some good things aren’t
changing around here in 2009:
1) Footcare is here at the
Senior Center twice a month.
Only $15. Call for an appoint-
ment.
2) Breakfasts here at the
center for the new year are still
only $3.00, Fridays, 7:30-9:00
a.m.
3) Golden Oldies here on
Wednesdays. Come join in the
fun, food and music.
4) Good deals in our thrift
shop. Always half price on the
last weekend of the month.
5) Birthday celebrations
here on the last Friday of each
month. ALL January birthdays
will be celebrated January
30th; cake and ice cream after
lunch.
6) Still collecting member-
ship dues; only $10.
So after days of this past
disabling weather, I finally went
home and ripped the “Let it
Snow” stickers off of my patio
window. Hope everyone is get-
ting back to normal by now
though. Come in to the center,
have lunch, and sit by a nice
warm fire.
