The INDEPENDENT, December 4, 2008 Page 21 Letters From page 3 moved from this meeting. I will have you removed from this meeting if you don’t stop shak- ing your head.” We must demand that Ste- vens be removed immediately from the Senate for his corrup- tion. Rather than more drilling, we must demand massive in- vestment in energy efficiency, solar and wind power to create good, clean sustainable jobs and do something about the cli- mate crisis: by far the most im- portant issue of our time. Chad Kister Nelsonville, Ohio Governor should cut his, others salaries To The Editor: I have heard the plan of our, not too bright Governor I do fear. Of raising our tax load by a whopping 200 million dollars. I would like to share with him, and you, my views. Why not do this, call for a cut of at least 50 percent in your and the state legislators salary? That way perhaps you could realize how those that are facing job loss and we who are forced to try to keep bread on the table and a roof over our head as we at- tempt stretching a highly inflat- ed dollar on a fixed income. My idea number two is to stop all foreign imports into the U.S. If we can not produce it with American labor then we surely don’t need it. Stop even thinking of spend- ing any money on those U.S. car makers while their C.O.’s ride to Washington on their own Ike Says… From page 2 close to the same. Rifle elk hunters during the first bull elk season had it tough again this year. The weather was warm and dry with a lot of morning fog, which just makes for rough conditions. In 2007 the Saddle Mt. first season hunters had only a nine percent success rate; I bet we will be close to that or under this year. Second season bull elk hunters didn’t see much better condi- tions and I predict they will fall short of the 15 percent success rate they had in 2007. Cow elk harvests in both the Scappoose and Saddle Mt. units have been scaled back some, many will see it increas- ingly harder to draw a cow tag. Part of the reason is the num- ber of cow elk falling to dis- abled hunters during regular seasons. ODF&W was forced to withdraw that amount from the other seasons to make up for this new harvest. Also, the Saddle Mt. unit Management Objective for elk has not been met in recent years, for total population, so there was a forced reduction in tags to re- cover the population. 283 cows total were taken in the Saddle Mt. unit in 2007, which was only 65 ercent of the bull harvest. In many years past, the cow harvest equaled or ex- ceeded the bull harvest. So, hopefully, the elk numbers will edge back up to where they be- long. Have a merry Christmas! Why not send a few of those dollars to the paper mill in St. Helens where over 300 em- ployees are facing layoffs? I am sure Boise Cascade could find a better use for it than either the U.S. auto maker big shots, some drawing as much as a million and a half per year, or the Wall Street gang. P.S. Thank you kindly. I had to get this off my chest or else explode. I was 10 years old when the big one came in 29. One thing then, there was no money but most were farmers and had stock for milk and meat. Also large gardens where most everything we ate was grown. What we did not eat my mama canned and put away for the winter. Juneious F. Harty Scappoose 20 Years Ago This Month From page 18 The fact that Vernonia isn’t the only contributor to the problem doesn’t remove the responsibil- ity. Consideration of a city ad- ministrator needs to be put back on track. Without some changes in administration, no council policy will work, howev- er clear and consistent it may be. Elimination of substandard buildings and other public nui- sances needs to be continued. Though many have been re- moved, some of the worst are still attracting rats, and the pro- gram seems to be at a stand- still. We have a new council and a new year. The situation cries out for new resolutions of old problems. We couldn’t be more sincere when we wish the council a happy and successful new year. Edna VanDerZanden and Gladys Ko- hon.
