Hope every- one is winding d o w n t h e i r summer vacation with some fun plans; some of them not too far from home, I imagine; would you have ever believed how excited we would be to see gas go DOWN to $4 something?!! And now I hear they might be weighing you when you check in for a flight! Well, they did weigh me up in Anchorage a few weeks ago before our flight to Iliamna Lake, much to my embarrassment – after 5 days of eating, fishing, eating and fishing, and eating at Rain- bow River Lodge. I feared they would stick me in the extra bag- gage compartment on the way back. By the way, Tobi, turning 60 isn’t too bad after all; I reeled in my first ever fish, a sockeye salmon. And thank you Betty, Pauline, Fran and all involved in your very well hidden birth- day party surprise at the center. Thanks for helping my tenure there be a delightful place to work! August 15 is the Senior Pic- nic at Anderson Park. Golden Oldies Band will provide the entertainment; bring side dish- es; See you there! On August 19, see you here at the center for a visit with Bet- sy Johnson and Brad Witt. August 20, Attorney Maddy Vernonia man found dead in vehicle Sheehan from Scappoose will be here to consult with seniors on certain issues. Call my of- fice for information. August 21 – Fundraiser BIN- GO for the Center; 1-3 p.m. 25 cents per card per game. Fun time, fun prizes. And don’t forget – the LAST Friday of every month we have an ice cream celebration after lunch for ALL those who have birthdays that month. In 1989, Barry Buch was standing beside a car that had two broken windows when a San Mateo County, California, deputy sheriff asked him for identification. Buch absent- mindedly handed him the one official-looking document he had; a copy of an arrest war- rant sworn out against him for driving with a suspended li- cense…oops. All golfers are invited to come out, have some fun, and help raise money for Logger Football players. Check in time is at 11:15 a.m. with a shotgun start at noon. There will be prizes and a barbeque lunch afterward. Entry is $60 per person (with- out cart), $240 per team (with- out cart), and $24 for a golf cart. Registration deadline is Au- gust 13; forms are available at the Vernonia School District Of- fice. The death of a Vernonia man on Friday, July 18, has been determined by the State Medical Examiner’s office to be from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Just minutes after receiving a report of a man with a gun, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Ver- nonia Police Officer Michael Connor and Sergeant Mike Kay saw the vehicle associated with the call and pulled in behind it on Washington Avenue near B Street. As the officers arrived, a 20 year-old woman got out the driver’s side and told officers there was a man in the car with a gunshot wound. The officers confirmed the report and called for medical response. The man, identified as Kolton Owen Graham, 21, Ver- nonia, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was in posses- sion of a handgun. Graham was an acquain- tance of the female driver and reportedly had gone to the res- idence where she was, then, armed with a handgun, con- fronted someone else there re- garding a personal matter. Gra- ham left in a vehicle that was driven by the woman. The State Medical Examin- er’s office determined the cause of death on Sunday, July 20. Non-profit grants are now available Nonprofit organizations a- cross Oregon may now apply for two types of grants from the Oregon Council for the Human- ities (OCH): Public Program Grants between $1,000 and $5,000 and Opportunity Grants up to $1,000. Grant guidelines, including themes of interest, are available for download on the OCH website (www.ore gonhum.org) or by request from Development and Pro- gram Coordinator Annie Dubin- sky at (503) 241-0543. Public Program Grants are awarded once a year. Letters of intent to apply for Public Pro- gram Grants must be post- marked by November 3, 2008. Plan now for Community-Wide sale Vernonia’s 10th Annual Community-Wide Garage Sale will be on Saturday, Sept 20, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. All residents and businesses wanting to be included can sign up by calling Helen Bateman at 503-429-6203. Maps of all participating lo- cations will be available on Fri- day before the Sale. In past years sales have been held at over 40 locations. Several groups have donated all or a portion of their proceeds to lo- cal non-profit organizations or individuals in need of assis- tance. Opportunity Grants are award- ed year-round. Applications for Opportunity Grants are re- viewed on a monthly basis and will be accepted from Novem- ber 1, 2008, to October 31, 2009. OCH funds programs that offer opportunities for civic en- gagement and humanities learning, respond to timely is- sues and ideas in communities across Oregon, and provide a broad context for public dia- logue. Special consideration will be given to projects that ex- plore globalism, media and consumer culture, and place and community.
