The INDEPENDENT, June 19, 2008 Community Events added to July First Friday First Friday’s third event will be held on the 4th of July this year on Madison Street, Ver- nonia, from 4:00 p.m. until the parade starts. This will again include an Open Air Market featuring home grown fresh produce, and an art show pre- senting local artists, artisans and crafters. There will also be chalk art activity for children on the Madison Street sidewalk ($1.00 per child) between Cor- nerstone Naturals and New Day Massage. A bonus will be fresh watermelon at $1.00 per slice. Several businesses will ex- tend their hours to stay open through First Friday, including some that will offer First Friday specials. First Friday will run through November, rain or shine, with the Art Show being moved to the Grange on August 2 and 3, during Jamboree. Plan now for 4th of July Parade The 4th of July Parade will, once again, be sponsored by Vernonia Pride. Vernonia Pride hopes that there will be many entries this year. Due to some problems in the past, ATVs and motorcycles will not be allowed. The parade will assemble on Weed Ave., start at 7:00 p.m. and finish at Vernonia Middle School. There will be fireworks again this year, but it is the last year for Vernonia Pride to sponsor the fireworks. It is unknown, at this time, whether there will be fireworks at future 4th of July celebrations in Vernonia. Bow Wow Hour will benefit CHS Bow Wow Hour, a benefit for the Columbia Humane Society, will be held on Saturday, June 21, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Varsity Grill & Bar in Scap- poose, 52001 S. Columbia Riv- er Hwy. Doggy massage, low cost microchipping and raffle drawings available. Bring your 4-legged friend and join the party! Questions? Call 503-397-4353. WE now have a Wii for game day here at the Vernonia Senior Center for any senior 50 and up. Wii fans out there inter- ested in game day and an up- coming bowling tournament – come on down. Also, if anyone has a larger sized screen TV for donation or sale, let us know! Senior Day at the COLUM- BIA COUNTY FAIR is Wednes- day, July 16. Free for seniors, 65 and up, so come root for Vernonia’s princess, Carol Sawyer. Call our office for infor- mation on transportation for that day. Footcare is still available here twice a month. Only $15. Swimming passes on Commu- nity Action Team’s grant are also available. Call my office for information. Connie’s fabulous break- Join Oregon author Wright at Library Oregon author George By- ron Wright will be at the Ver- nonia Public Library on Mon- day, June 30, at 7:00 p.m., as a guest of the Vernonia Library Book Discussion Group. Wright was born in The Dalles and also lived in Baker City, Tillamook and Roseburg, while growing up. At various times, he has edited a national newsletter for not-for-profit CEOs, owned a bookstore and written a newspaper column. He began writing novels in the early ‘90s. In 1996, he began his “Ore- gon Trio” of books, and recent- ly completed this body of work. The “Oregon Trio” is made up of Baker City 1948, Tillamook 1952 and Roseburg 1959. Roseburg 1959 is the latest choice of the Vernonia Library Page 7 Book Discussion Group, but it is not necessary to have read the book to enjoy this evening with the author. He jumped out of the car to help her, but forgot to put on the brake forcing the driving instructor to stop the car. He was only learning to drive be- cause he thought he should be a regular person. But, “that was stupid”. Well, we like regular people around here…so come on in for lunch and browse our thrift store. And sign up for my next AARP driving class!
