Applications now being accepted Oregon HEAT fundraiser to assist for two electrician apprenticeship programs Vernonia area with energy bills The NECA-IBEW Electrical JATC offers a five-year appren- ticeship program, and the Lim- ited Energy Technician JATC offers a four-year apprentice- ship program. Both programs combine on-the-job training (OJT) and related classroom training. Oregon-Columbia Chapter NECA and IBEW Local 48 sponsor these programs. If accepted into the program, apprentices are assigned to an electrical contractor for a mini- mum of 8000 OJT hours; there is no guarantee of 40 hours per week. Apprentices will com- plete a total of 10 terms (8 terms for Limited Energy Tech- nician) of school for NECA- IBEW Electrical JATC; classes meet at the NECA-IBEW Elec- trical Training Center, 16021 NE Airport Way, Portland. Costs for the programs in- clude tools and books of ap- proximately $600 for the first year, less for later years. Schol- arships may be available for the NECA-IBEW Electrical JATC program. Descriptions of work per- formed and apprenticeship wage information is available online at www.nietc.org. Applications will be accept- ed at the Electrical Training Center July 7-11 and July 14- 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Applicants must bring photo identification, a non-refundable $25.00 application fee (some waivers available), high school, GED or Associate Degree tran- scripts and all supporting docu- ments. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. A NJATC aptitude test will be scheduled and applicant must receive a qualifying score when tested. Johnson: Retirement has been elusive goal From page 1 council has been working to- gether, too. Johnson has come to some cities and found coun- cil in-fighting, but not here in Vernonia. That makes manag- ing those relationships easier, he says. Johnson, whose first official day on the job was June 3, ex- pects to be in Vernonia for about seven months, and is ful- ly prepared to help the city council start the hiring process to find the next city administra- tor. Then, maybe, he can final- ly get to try for more retirement, at least more than the two months of travel in New Zea- land he’s managed so far. The Oregon Public Purchas- ing Association (OPPA) raised $1,648 to support Oregon HEAT during OPPA’s Annual Spring Conference & Exhibitor Showcase in Redmond last week. The money will provide energy assistance to the Ver- nonia area community impact- ed by devastating floods in De- cember 2007. Oregon HEAT is an inde- pendent nonprofit organization committed to providing emer- gency energy assistance to households in crisis through its statewide network of 34 partner agencies. Oregon HEAT’s mis- sion is to develop and coordi- nate resources to help low in- come Oregonians meet their energy needs and achieve en- ergy self-reliance through ener- gy education and advocacy. OPPA hosted a silent auc- tion and a 75/25 raffle during the conference, whose focus this year was on environmen- tally sustainable procurement issues. Conference attendees bid generously and raised $1,109 on silent auction items donated by OPPA members and exhibitors. Raffle ticket sales raised another $539; the winner of the raffle draw donat- ed the 25 percent winning pro- ceeds back to Oregon HEAT.
