Page 22 The INDEPENDENT, June 5, 2008 Ike Says… WEATHER REPORT APRIL 2008 From page 2 Sea-run Cutthroat Trout. Fair enough, but what about inten- tionally targeting known Sea-run Cutthroat Trout during the fall? C&R is not without mortality, es- pecially when water conditions are warm and adult fish need the most protection. This seems a little disingenuous to me. So how are fish populations doing in our area? That’s a big question with not a lot of an- swers other than what the local fisherpersons find when they go out. In the upper Nehalem, fishing is always good, some- times better and sometimes not. This year is going down as a not year. A friend of mine sums it up this way, “Usually we catch and release about 100 trout between two of us on a trip; the better years it gets up to 150 or more, this year was low at about 80 fish.” Locals are also finding fewer big fish, which in past years has been almost a guarantee. So, what happened? Well my speculation is the flood, es- pecially the timing of the flood, which was earlier than most lo- cal floods. Maybe the stress of a flood so early in the winter was more than large trout can tolerate, or it could be the re- duction in feed early in the win- ter. The flood of ‘96 did not seem to have this effect at all, but then it was in February. My friend mentioned that some of the trout had big heads in com- parison to their bodies, this is an indicator of competition for feed. Could it be that the non- consumption of Cutthroat Trout has led to their decline? Stranger things have hap- pened.
