The INDEPENDENT, May 1, 2008 Page 7 Community Bridges to share comments May 3 Join the Bridges Planning Group this Saturday, May 3, for a Vernonia 2020 Vision Com- munity Check-In. The purpose of this gathering is to provide you with the opportunity to see what Bridges Planning has been doing with the comments provided at community meet- ings. This will be one of several opportunities to provide feed- back on the direction being tak- en during the informal meeting. The meeting will be held at Vernonia Community Church, located at 967 State Avenue, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Morning refreshments and snacks will be provided. Kids are welcome. Next Library program on May 12 “Birdsong: Birds as Meta- phor in American Folk Music” is the title of a Chautauqua pro- gram to be presented by Jeni Foster at the Vernonia Public Library on Monday, May 12, at 7:00 p.m. Bird flight and bird song pro- vide lyrical and potent meta- phors for life, love, freedom, death and spirituality in cul- tures around the world. Foster will show, through lecture and music, how these songs reflect an American sense of adven- ture, opportunity and freedom. Refreshments will follow the program. The presentation in made in conjunction with the Friends of the Library and funding from the Oregon Council for the Humanities. Overnight accommodations are provided by the Friends of the Library and the Vernonia Inn Bed & Breakfast. Senior News By Karen Miller Senior Advocate By the time you r e a d this, we will have had our 5-area lunch on Monday, April 28, which celebrated the grand opening of our Senior Center. I’m not sure about a lifeboat count around here, but with all our well-done construction, we won’t worry about “bursting at the seams” with patrons! Come one, come all, and visit us with our newly remodeled thrift store, lunches Monday through Friday at noon (for only a $3.00 donation for those 60 and over The flamingoes are set to fly to Vernonia soon The flamingos are flocking to Vernonia very soon…you may see them landing on your lawns at any time. Vernonia Boy Scout troop 201 will start their annual fundraiser during the month of May. This is a way for the boys to earn money for their sum- mer camp. If you can help sup- port them – they would greatly appreciate it! Here is how it works. If you would like to have the flock of flamingoes land in a neigh- bors/family/friends yard just call Jon Steward at 503-819- 2656 or Tera Roberts at 503- 429-6006. When you make a donation to the Boy Scouts, the birds will appear at the address you re- quest. If YOU happen to have the flock land in your yard and want them to find a new loca- tion, contact Jon or Tera and leave a donation to have them “fly away”. Sir Isaac Newton’s maid, I read, once found the great man in the kitchen, stand- ing in front of a pot of boiling water. Baffled, he gazed first at the pot, which contained his watch, and next at his hand, which held an egg.
