The INDEPENDENT, April 3, 2008 Two plays at the Grange tomorrow The Greenleaf Acting Com- pany and Vernonia Home- schoolers will be presenting 2 plays on April 4 and 5. A group of younger actors will act in the beloved story of “Heidi,” about the adventures of a young or- phan girl and set against the backdrop of the Swiss Alps. The play being performed by the high school actors is enti- tled “The Ugly Duckling.” It is a comedy about the marriage prospects of a so-called “ugly” fairy tale princess. Both plays include lively action, colorful costumes and sets, and even some music and dancing. The plays are directed by Rachel, Margaret, Alberta, and Caleb Hardy, of the Greenleaf Acting Company of Scappoose. The performances, a dou- bleheader, will be at the Ver- nonia Grange at North and Washington, one block north of Vernonia High School, on Fri- day evening, April 4, at 7:30 p.m. plus a Saturday Matinee on April 5 at 2:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend. The per- formances are free, but dona- tions are gladly accepted. Vernonia Library offers activities during National Library Week National Library Week is April 13-19. The Friends of the Vernonia Public Library invite you to celebrate the week at the Vernonia Public Library. During National Library Week there will be free books and book bags for youngsters, and B.J. the Clown will join the festivities on Tuesday, April 15, at 7:00 p.m. Youngsters can enter draw- ings for the Spiderwick Chroni- cles and two tickets to the movie. Adults can enter to win a gardening basket on Satur- day, April 19. CCF seeks volunteer application The Columbia County Board of Commissioners is soliciting applicants from county citizens who are willing to serve on lo- cal boards, committees, com- missions and advisory boards. These committees help shape public policy for the county. The Commission on Chil- dren and Families is seeking applications for membership. This 20-member volunteer commission is advisory to the Board of County Commission- S O LV e v e n t s set for April 19 The 19th annual SOLV IT event, presented by Portland General Electric (PGE) and co- ordinated by SOLV, takes place on Saturday, April 19, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Approximately 4,000 volun- teers are needed to complete projects at 100 sites in the Greater Portland Metropolitan area, including Clackamas, Columbia, Multnomah, Wash- ington and Yamhill Counties. For more information, call Jan Spika Kenna at 503-397- 7225. 1 2 Page 9 Bits & Bites By Jacqueline Ramsay I may be open- ing my mouth when I should keep it shut but since I’m u s i n g pen and paper – Please, some- one, show me where in the City Charter, by-laws, or whatever or wherever it says the City Manager, Mayor or Council has the right to proofread and OK the reporting of pertinent facts to the citizens of the town through the local papers. Black is black, white is white, is our governing body trying to make things gray? Since I do not at- tend council meeting anymore maybe I don’t have the right to say what I think either, but it seems to me if true facts can’t be reported in the paper we lo- cals will never really know what goes on in our town. I’ve heard a rumble the council may be cutting the police to save mon- ey. That is feeding Vernonia to the animals. AND, in response to a remark in the audit report (paper of 3-20, pg. 4, column 3) “It’s the citizens responsibilities to pool together and cover these costs,” I think the citizens of Vernonia have “pooled” for years but we’re not asked or in- formed when the monies were shifted from one account to an- other. You can only pay a bill if you have a job. From the lighter side of life – Wednesday, March 26, the Se- nior Center lunch program got back in full swing. Golden Oldies Band, friends and good food. The thrift store will be open before long – new carpet, new clothes racks – nice. The only sad note for the day was learning of those folks who have passed away during the last four months. They will be greatly missed. A remark was made – Be glad for each birth- day you celebrate, you will live longer and there is always someone who loves you for your being just you. Please note: Vernonia Cares now has their own bread con- tract and anyone needing bread is welcome to come in Tuesday or Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. For those able to donate toward the ‘gas delivery fund’ it will be greatly appreciated. How about that snow storm we had last Wednesday after- noon?? A Big thank you to all of the college kids who were in town, using their Spring Break to help the locals with yard work and more. Those helping me by cleaning off my roof discovered I had two tree limbs embedded in my roof. I found a roofer with a good heart and time enough to patch my holes – just before the rains came Tuesday night. Bless all of you. May 10 chosen for Clean Up Day Vernonia Pride has set May 10 as the annual City-Wide Clean-Up day this year. Registration will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the Providence Health Center parking lot. If your group or organization has a specific area or project in mind, call Reva Marchant at 503-913-2703 to pre-register. Bring your work gloves, rakes, shovels, weedeater, or other equipment and join the yearly clean up.
