Have you Flood DVD material being sought Flood pictures, video, and stories are needed for a 2007 flood DVD being put together by Dale and Donna Webb. They would like to include video footage and pictures, along with stories of what peo- ple saw or experienced. There is also a local group forming to assess possible so- lutions to the flooding and would like to hear your ideas. Oregon Sr. Spelling Bee date set The Aurora Colony Historical Society will once again sponsor Oregon’s Senior Spelling Bee. The date is Saturday, April 12. The Bee is held in Aurora at the Pythian Hall, at the corner of 2nd Street and 99-E. It begins promptly at 1:00 p.m. and con- sists of four rounds of written words followed by a dinner break, oral rounds and the awarding of trophies for first, second and third place win- ners. The event usually con- cludes by 4:00 pm. The competition is point scoring, with oral rounds for the top contenders. It is fun for all who compete as well as those who come to support their fa- vorite competitor. The winner is encouraged to attend the Na- tional Senior Bee held in Cheyenne, Wyoming, in June. Oregon contestants have been incredibly successful over the years. Four of the first place winners in the last eight years have been Oregonians, two of whom were from Vernonia! Some financial assistance is given the first place winner at- tending the national event. Now I read that if you get onto Google that some 126,000,000 pages worth of new year’s res- olutions will pop up! Let’s sim- plify this down to the most com- mon ten according to one ana- lyzer: 1) Cultivate more family- friends time. 2) Make exercise a routine. 3) Shed the extra pounds. 4) Quit smoking. 5) Find ways to reduce stress. 6) Quit drinking. 7) Get out of debt. 8) Learn something you never knew before. 9) Be a vol- unteer. 10) Seize the day in an organized way. A 100-yr old driver from Bel- gium has been given an insur- ance discount because he has- n’t had an accident in more than 80 years of driving, I read. The veteran motorist still drives his car every day to shop or go fishing. He claims he owes part of his clean driving record to…familiarity. “I am aware of my surroundings and know ex- actly where everything is.” This centenarian plans to keep driv- ing for another decade! Join us to learn other safe driving tips. AARP Safe driving classes will be starting up again; please call me to get on the list. An up- coming class in Clatskanie is on the docket also. Let’s switch over to the Vernonia Grange Hall where some of the community had a great time at the Sadie Hawkins Dance last Friday night, February 29, with that to- tally awesome band, Columbia Crew, from Astoria!
