The INDEPENDENT, February 7, 2008 Page 7 Community 20 Years ago this Month The February 25, 1988, is- sue of The Independent had the following story on page 7: Howard Hopkins was ap- pointed by Mayor Wally Vaughn to fill the vacancy cre- ated on the Vernonia City Council by the resignation of Tom Buffington in January. A commercial tree farm manager, Hopkins was also given his first assignment for the city – assess the city’s tim- ber and determine where the city can log in order to raise $10,000 towards an addition to the fire hall. The addition will house the city’s ambulances. The non-profit corporation that operates the Vernonia Medical Center asked permis- sion to use a city owned lot be- hind city hall, either by lease or donation, to build a new facility. After discussion, council members declined on the basis that the lot is too small for a medical center and that the space is needed for city hall parking. Long-term plans to move the police department into the space now occupied by ambulances, when the ambu- lances are moved, will also cre- ate a need for more parking space, the council agreed. In other business, the coun- cil: Approved increasing the fee for a building permit to $10; Approved payment of $11,048.75 to C-Com for am- bulance and fire department dispatching; Agreed to donate fencing to the Cemetery Committee for use at Pioneer Cemetery; Directed Dunaway to send a letter to Rep. Les AuCoin ex- pressing concern over the FCC ruling that removes control of cable rates from local govern- ment. Senior News By Karen Miller Senior Advocate Trying to stay on a positive n o t e while still wading through insur- ances, repairing, shifting locations, etc., for many of us yet. It is now February 1 and the sun is out! Also, I am looking out at my birdfeeder that says “Let’s eat” and am anxiously awaiting, along with many of you, our grand reopening of the Vernon- ia Senior Center, which is now slated for mid- March. We WILL reopen…temporarily until a new location is found. Read this column for future information about new policies going into affect, one being No-Limit Texas Hold’Em on February 9 The Vernonia Lions Club will hold their monthly No-Limit Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament on Saturday, February 9, starting at 6:00 p.m. at the Buckhorn Restaurant. Entry will be $20. Tournaments are scheduled for the second Saturday of each month, with half of the proceeds going to the prize pool, and the other half to the Lions Club for their public serv- ice projects. Prizes are in the form of pre-paid VISA cards in the designated cash prize amount, which is determined by the number of entrants. There will be no tournament in March, and the April 12 tour- nament will have a $40 buy-in. The Vernonia Lions Club do- nated over $9,000 to local proj- ects and organizations last year, and more than $46,000 over the last five years. Funds have provided hearing and vi- sion screening for students and seniors, glasses and vision sur- gery, the Vernonia Police De- partment D.A.R.E. car, a K9 bullet-proof vest, scholarships, helped fund the Gales Creek Diabetes Camp, Echoing Ever- green Youth Camp and helps local students travel to Wash- ington, D.C.
