Page 4 The INDEPENDENT, November 15, 2007 Results of November 6 election Area Holiday events getting underway Both Columbia and Clatsop Counties were in step with the rest of the state in the Novem- ber 6 General Election, approv- ing Measure 49 and turning thumbs down on Measure 50. In Columbia County, 63.63 percent of registered voters cast their ballots, with 56.7 per- cent of those saying yes to Measure 49 and 43.3 percent voting against the proposal to modify Measure 37. Measure 50 was defeated with nearly 70 percent of voters opposing the proposal to fund children’s health care via a cig- arette tax, while 30.2 percent approved the measure. In Clatsop County, 64.45 per- cent of registered voters cast ballots. Of those, 62.78 percent approved Measure 49 with 37.22 percent in opposition. Unemployment in Columbia County Columbia County’s season- ally adjusted unemployment rate was essentially un- changed at 5.9 percent in Sep- tember from the previous month (5.7%) and from one year before (5.8%). Total employment rose by 98 to 22,960 and the number of unemployed people fell by 59 to 1,291.
