Page 4 The INDEPENDENT, October 4, 2007 Airport Committee appointment postponed From page 1 that nothing has been done about this. Councilor Shirlee Daughtry said she’d brought this to (City Administrator M.R. “Dick”) Kline’s attention about a month ago. Andersen, who is on the Parks Committee, said she was not speaking for that committee but for herself. Har- rison said this needs to be a priority and thanked Andersen for the “head’s up.” There was a letter from Bud Dow asking to be appointed to the Airport Committee. Kline told Mayor Sally Harrison that he was aware of at least three additional people who were in- terested in serving on that com- mittee and he recommended that the committee review all the applications and make a recommendation to the council. Harrison agreed. The Salmon Festival re- quested and was unanimously granted (with the exception of Councilor Randy Parrow, who was absent) approval to close Park Drive from noon on Friday, October 5, until noon on Sun- day, October 7, for Salmon Festival activities, which will take place on Saturday, Octo- ber 6. Kline told council that the city just completed a premium Worker’s Compensation Insur- ance audit so information can be gathered in the manner the insurance company wants in order for the insurance to be re- newed. “The city’s auditors were sur- prised we were ready for their visit,” Kline continued during his staff report. He told council that the new chart of accounts being used makes ‘a world of differ- ence,’ and that he hopes to be able to have three month ex- penditure reports for the council at the next meeting. The OA Hill Bike/Ped project may be done and the city may soon be able to draw down the final $175,000 in grant money. Kline told council that public works has finished grinding Regulations apply to burn permits down the driveway/sidewalk in- terfaces and that should com- plete the items needed to close out this project. The next council meeting will be Monday, October 15, at 7:00 p.m. in City Hall. Columbia County employment figures remain unchanged Columbia County’s season- ally adjusted unemployment rate was essentially unchanged at 5.7 percent in August from 5.9 percent the previous month and from one year before (5.9%). The rate was close to the statewide rate (5.4%) but higher than the national rate (4.6%). Total employment rose by 100 to 22,862 and the num- ber of unemployed people fell by 77 to 1,350. Total employ- ment this August was 261 more than one year before and there were 37 fewer people unem- ployed this year.
