The INDEPENDENT, September 20, 2007 St. Mary’s 37th Quilt Fair starts today St. Mary’s annual Quilt Fair is celebrating its 37th year on September 20, 21, 22 and 23. The doors are open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to browse the beautiful handmade quilts, some for sale, some for display only. The yearly event is held at the church hall, 960 Missouri Avenue, Vernonia. The theme this year is “A Stroll Down Memory Lane.” The fair is also noted for the delicious lunches offered, with daily choices of two home- made soups, rolls and des- serts. Each year the ‘quilting ladies’ raffle their Star of Beth- lehem quilt. Raffle tickets can be purchased at the event. The raffle will be held at 4:00 p.m. on September 23. Hunter’s Dinner and Raffle this weekend The Vernonia Senior Center Hunters and Fishermens Raffle & Dinner is fast approaching and will be here on Saturday, September 22 starting at 6:00 p.m. at the Senior Center. Now is the time to get tickets for the raffle for $1 per ticket at Vernonia Hardware, Triple S Service, Napa Auto Parts, Ver- nonia Senior Center, and Sporty’s in Clatskanie. Items being raffled include a Ruger 300 magnum rifle with Leupold 2.5-8 scope, a Ruger .204 caliber rifle, a Savage 17HMR rifle, a Speedtech, binoculars, knives, hunting and camping gear, gift certificates, and more. The dinner includes hunters stew, salad, corn bread, dessert and beverage for $6 per person.. 50 Years Ago This Month The September 12, 1957, is- sue of the Vernonia Eagle in- cluded the following news story on the front page: Wednesday morning about 11:30 a.m. the last log was cut at The International Paper com- pany, Long-Bell division, mill here, just a little more than 33 years after the first log was cut in July of 1924. The last paragraph said: The town is strangely quiet without the sawmill sounds that have become so much a part of the way of life here. An era has ended and eyes now turn to the future with hopes for something new to fill the void. All proceeds go to the new Senior Center building fund and you need not be present to win. There is a line in an old song, “When did your hair turn to silver?” Well, mine has been silver since I was 25 years old so my question to myself is – when did you put away your books, your chalks, watercol- ors, pencils, pens and paper? When did the poetry stop flow- ing? Why is your quilting in a box, the mending and sewing stacked on a chair? Where did the slow walks through the countryside go? Or, the just sit- ting in the shade munching an apple with your dog and a good book? Stop and take a look. Granny Rachael hangs in a $45. So now I’m retired again – Ho, Ho, you say to yourself. I’m going to luxuriate in sleeping till 10:00 a.m. if I feel like it. Take a few more long bubble baths, then put on my jeans, tie up my hair, grab a broom, the vacu- um, bucket and rags, denude the walls of pictures and stuff. (But I’ll keep Wednesdays open for lunch and the Golden Oldies at the Senior Center.) It may take me all of 60 days to be more than sick of house- work (but I promised my doctor I would slow down, so I’m going to enjoy myself doing for me first for awhile). I will see you in the funnies though and I can get Bits & Bites written before the last bell rings. And even enjoy a game or two of Solitaire. Oh, I have noticed people are now trying to catch all the ‘little’ bunnies at the lake green. They are multiplying rather fast.
