The INDEPENDENT, September 20, 2007 Community More fundraisers planned to help with Schaumburg medical costs Vernonian Dean Schaum- burg received major injuries in a logging accident on August 16, and is still hospitalized. A fundraising event and con- cert to benefit Schaumburg will be held on Friday, September 21, at Hawkins Park, starting at 5:00 p.m. The event includes food for sale by Bill and Carla Long (Café 47), T-shirts sales, a bake sale, and an auction called by Bill Yeo at 7:00 p.m. At 7:30 p.m. there will be a concert by western singer Jesse Cain, who appeared here during the KUPL Fishing Derby. There will be a $5.00 admis- sion per person. Everything is being donated, so all money taken in will go to the Schaum- burg’s to help with medical bills. There is also an account set up at Wauna for donations. To donate an auction item, call Ginger at 503-429-2462. Another fundraiser is sched- uled for September 30 at The Flying Pig Bar & Grill in Man- ning (was Old Dingheiser), from 2:00 to 9:00 p.m. This event will include a taco feed, a horseshoe tournament at 3:00 p.m., an auction at 6:00 p.m., banana split party (food smear style), open mic music, frisbee golf and 9-ball tourna- ments. Must be 21 years old or over to attend. Sign-ups start September 22 and continue until the events start. For more information on this event, call 503-324-4848. Salmon Festival events planned Plan now to enjoy the fifth annual Vernonia Salmon Festi- val on Saturday, October 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Hawkins Park, Vernonia. Salmon Festival celebrates the salmon returning from the ocean to spawn. Fantastic viewing sites of the salmon fighting their way upstream are just part of this creative, family event. Please remember it is a crime to bother the salmon dur- ing the time they are spawning, so look, but don’t touch. Other activities include Arts & Crafts, Hay Rides, Kids’ Fish- ing Pond, Knee Deep in Salmon Auction, Live Music in the Park, Native American Dancing, Pumpkin Carving, Salmon Cook Off, Salmon Edu- cational Activities, Scarecrow Building and W i n e Tasting. Enjoy 1st Fridays and give ideas October’s First Friday in Ver- nonia will occur on the fifth, the eve of Salmonfest. Regular First Friday events include local artists’ works on display at the Gallery in the Vernonia Learn- ing Center, extended business hours, street musicians and other surprises at various mer- chants and other sites along Bridge Street. Locations and times for First Friday events will be posted at the Learning Cen- ter. First Friday hours are from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Other activities that coincide with the October First Friday in- clude the Fresh Air Market in the VCLC Courtyard, 4-7:00 p.m., and Open Mike Night at the Grange, 8-10 p.m. (per- former sign-up starts at 7:30). A planning committee for fu- ture First Fridays has been es- tablished under the auspices of Vernonia Hands-on Art and the Chamber of Commerce. Sever- al First Friday related events are already scheduled through December. Judge McLean will be missed in our communi- ty and our sympathies are ex- tended to his beloved wife, Sandy, and family. Don’t forget!! Saturday night here at our dining hall is the Center’s second annual fund- raiser: Hunter’s Dinner and Raffle beginning at 6:00 p.m.! Dinner is $6 and raffle tickets are $1 for the rifles and other hunting and fishing items like binoculars, knives, etc., and plenty of free doorprizes will fill the docket. You may be the lucky winner of Brad Paisley’s book Jug Fishing for Greazy, with his hit CD “I’m Gonna Miss Her!” and other fun items. See you Saturday. We enjoyed an informative visit from Vernonia Mayor Sally Harrison and City Administrator Dick Kline on Wednesday for lunch.
