The INDEPENDENT, July 19, 2007 Page 13 Banks School Board hears from the Facility Planning Committee Kathy Edison was sworn in as the newest member of the Banks School Board of Direc- tors at their meeting July 9. Edi- son, who said that she was ex- cited to be there and looking forward to working hard, re- places outgoing director Gene Kelly. Since two board members, Duane Lundsten and Will Moore, were not at the meet- ing, the other directors voted to postpone electing a board chair and vice-chair for the 2007-08 school year until the next board meeting. Normally, no meeting is scheduled in August, but be- cause of this issue and things that may arise with the Facility Planning Committee, a meeting may be called in the next few weeks. Pete Edison, co-chair of the Facility Planning Committee, Citizen asks council about potholes on Banks Road From page 12 Citizen Marion Steinbach asked who she should contact about potholes surrounding the railroad tracks on NW Banks Road. Not only is it loud when cars “clunk over the tracks” but it is dangerous, she said. The City Recorder, who already had calls in to Washington County and the railroad, will forward Steinbach’s maintenance re- quest. The first request was for the board to authorize a hazardous material study. The junior high and high school have been identified as con- taining a significant amount of asbestos in the building materi- als, a major factor in the origi- nal committee’s recommenda- tion to remove these buildings. However, other reports have been found that indicate the schools do not present a haz- ardous materials exposure risk. The difference in these reports is most likely that the materials are safe until disturbed. The Facility Planning Committee is requesting that the board au- thorize a hazardous material study so the extent of any haz- ardous material removal in- volved in demolition or remod- eling can be determined.
