Page 10 The INDEPENDENT, February 1, 2007 Apply for agricultural scholarships The Oregon Agricultural Ed- ucation Foundation (OAEF) has two scholarships available for Oregon high school gradu- ates attending a junior college or a four-year college or univer- sity in Oregon, with plans to pursue a career in the agricul- ture industry. The Oregon Farm Bureau Memorial Scholarship is open to new and continuing full-time students, who are pursuing an agriculture-related major. Two scholarship winners will receive $1,500 and there will be a num- ber of $1,000 and $750 award recipients, depending on avail- able funds. (Typically, eight to 10 students are honored each year.) It is possible to reapply for the scholarship annually. The Willamette Valley Ag As- sociation Scholarship is avail- able to full-time students who are college-level juniors or higher, and are pursing an agri- Ekstrom, of Rainier, named rodeo Queen culture-related major. A number of $1,000 scholarships will be given, depending on available funds. A current application must be used when applying for the Academic Year 07-08. The deadline is April 1. Fair- grounds Pavilion in St. Helens. Here are the 2007 Columbia County Fair and Rodeo Court bios; 2007 Princess Mackenzie Carr is the daughter of Alan and Barb Carr of Vernonia. She Pantech, Worlds Smallest Flip phone. is a Junior at Vernonia High School, where she maintains a 4.0 GPA. She is a member of the varsity volleyball and high school equestrian teams. She is also a member of National Honor Society and Who’s Who Among High School Students. Mackenzie competes with the Athena Volleyball Club and is active in 4-H, competing at the local and state level. Sha- laina is a 2006 graduate of Mark Morris High School, where she was a member of the volleyball and softball teams, the Link mentor pro- gram, and was a writer for the school newspaper. She was also active in the 4-H horse program, competing at the state level in horse bowl and ground training. Her rodeo part- ner is Missy, an eight-year-old quarter horse mare. Shalaina currently attends Lower Colum- bia College. 2007 Queen Ashley Ekstrom is the daughter of Brent and Michelle Ekstrom of Rainier. She is a Senior at St. Helens High School, where she is in- volved in FBLA, OHSET, and OSSOM. She is active in the Ford Family Foundation for Community Building and the Columbia County Half Time Drill. She was the 2006 St. He- lens Festivals Queen and 2006 Columbia County Princess. She has been Swine and Horse 4-H member for nine years and is a 4-H Ambassador, Camp Counselor, and Livestock Men- tor. Ashley plans to enlist in the NROTC program with a major in Nursing and a minor in Pub- lic Relations. Ashley’s equine partners are her sorrel gelding “Zip” and Paint Gelding named “Mr. T.”
