The INDEPENDENT, September 21, 2006 47J Board agrees on four focus areas At the Vernonia School Dis- trict 47J Board meeting on September 14, the board heard from student representatives that the enrollment at Washing- ton Grade School is 303 and there are 165 students enrolled at Vernonia Middle School. No high school representative was available as they were at out- door school. The board approved the second reading of district poli- cies on purchasing, bidding, to- bacco-free environment, and parental rights, then approved an evaluation handbook for employees. Approval was given for hir- ing Juliet Safier for High School Language Arts, Elizabeth White as a Part-time Instructional As- sistant, and Jan Dyer as a Tem- porary Instructional Assistant. Superintendent Ken Cox re- ported that the modular from Lincoln Grade School was suc- cessfully moved on Saturday, September 9, and is now on- site behind Vernonia Middle School, awaiting a foundation. Cox also reported that the roof- ing projects at the grade school and the high school have been completed and that even the consultant was impressed by the work done. After the regular meeting, the board held a workshop on District Goals. The board agreed on four areas of focus: 1) improved communication, both district and community wide; 2) improving employee satisfaction; 3) “raising the bar” on professionalism within the district, and 4) improving the in- tegration of technology in the district. Future meeting will in- clude specific goals for each area of focus. The next board meeting will be October 12, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the District office, 475 Bridge St., Vernonia. Research from the National Center on Addic- tion and Substance Abuse at Columbia University strongly supports the importance of family meals in the lives of chil- dren and teens. Children and teens who come from families who eat together five to seven nights a week are at half the risk of substance abuse when compared to families that dine together infrequently. They are less likely to have friends that smoke, use drugs or alcohol; less likely to have thoughts about suicide and are more likely to do better in school. They also have fewer behavior problems, report lower levels of stress and tension at home and eat a healthier diet. Columbia County families who are working toward self sufficiency with the Department of Human Services will receive a family resource bag the week of September 25. Each bag will have books to encourage fami- lies to read together, book- marks, a calendar of family ac- tivities, a family cookbook, crayons and a toothbrush to encourage kids to brush after eating. In an effort to encourage all families to join together at the family table, Family Day cook- books, posters, bookmark and children’s books will be distrib- uted to schools, school libraries and city libraries throughout Columbia County. Columbia County Commis- sion on Children and Families and Oregon State University Extension Service host Family Day, with generous donations of books from Columbia Coun- ty Kiwanis clubs and Powell's Books. Fred Meyer is also a contributing partner. Make a date with family or friends for dinner.
