We will miss his smiling addition here on Wednesdays, when he loved to come listen to the Golden Oldies Band. Vernonia Cares cleared just over $1,000 and had only a few pieces of chicken left over of the 300 that were barbe- qued for the event. “Old Grad” picnic on August 20 The annual picnic of the Ver- nonia Society and “Old Grads” will be held August 20 at Ander- son Park in Vernonia. Registra- tion starts at 10:00 a.m. Hot dogs and soft drinks will be on sale by Vernonia Pride, or bring a picnic lunch. Coffee and cups will be provided. All former Vernonia resi- dents and their families are in- vited to visit with old friends or meet some new ones. Arts & Eats in St. Helens Aug. 12 The Riverside Arts & Eats Festival will be held Saturday, August 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Historic River- front District of St. Helens, Plaza Square, The Strand & Columbia View Park. The event is free. The Riverside Arts & Eats Festival is an experiential art and food festival, showcasing local and regional artists demonstrating how their art is created, culinary art demon- strations, a wine and beer gar- den featuring Columbia River wines and wineries, a Chil- dren’s Art Pavilion where kids can try lots of different art styles, and live music (jazz, Celtic, bluegrass & swing) at the Columbia View Amphithe- ater in Historic Riverfront St. Helens. The NW Steam Society will have its annual steam meet adding the ambience of steam boats whistles, and also allow- ing tours of many of the boats. The Oregon Maritime Museum will dock its Sternwheeler Port- land at the City Docks for three days (Friday-Sunday) with free tours of the sternwheeler mu- seum. I would like to express my heartfelt thank you to the Ver- nonia Senior Center for their kind expressions of sympa- thy and concern upon my re- turn after my sudden depar- ture to be at my dad’s side during the passing of his beloved wife of 66 years and my dear mother for 58 of those. Dad and Mom were married in l940 in San Jose, California, where she began her marriage as a dutiful Navy wife, taking care of the home front as Dad went off to war, like many others, flying his fighter planes in the South Pacific; following him and his Navy career with us 4 kids for the next 25 years; and still more moves to come after his retirement. True to form, I watched my mother main- tain her demeanor with the same sweetness and class that characterized her whole life. Good bye Mother. I will miss you. Thank you to senior mem- ber Dorothy Howard for gra- ciously (and beautifully!) repre- senting our Center at this year’s Columbia County Fair’s My Fair Lady’s Court. Tradition- ally, all five centers choose a senior to represent them for the coronation. Be sure to turn out at our Vernonia Jamboree to welcome Dorothy and ALL our previous queens (Louise Ham- nett, Etta Russell, Ruth Bell and this past year’s queen, Ne- cia DeWitt) from the Vernonia Center in the parade route! The Sweet Adelines will be serving breakfast here as usu- al, during Jamboree weekend. HUNTER’S DINNER and RAFFLE sponsored by the Ver- nonia Senior Center: Come purchase your tickets here for a Remington 17HMR rifle and a Remington 7MM magnum, also Nikon binoculars, hunting vest, hunting knives, Leupold spot- ting scope, game backpack, camouflage gear, rifle cleaning kit and much more. Tickets at only $1.00 each are on sale at Vernonia Hardware, Sporty’s in Clatskanie, and the Vernonia Senior Center. The evening will start with dinner at 6:00 p.m. on Sept 22, $6 per person for Hunters Stew, biscuits and dessert. Drawing will be at 7:00 p.m. (Must be 18 years or older to win rifles.)
