The INDEPENDENT, August 3, 2006 Page 13 There are many events to enjoy at Vernonia Friendship Jamboree Alternative Stage The Alternative Stage is a free three-day music festival, but donations are gratefully ac- cepted to help offset the ex- penses of the musicians. The music starts Friday, Au- gust 4, at 2:00 p.m. at the stage set up by the concrete building at Vernonia Lake. The final act takes the stage at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 6. Dress comfortably, bring lawn chairs or blankets for sit- ting. Cruisin Jamboree Cruisin 2006 will take place on Saturday, August 5, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with may classic, antique, and special interest cars filling the grounds around the Vernonia schools. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. and award presenta- tions start at 3:00 p.m. Sponsored by Nehalem Val- ley Speed & Beauty Car Club, the show also features live mu- sic by The Boomer Band and the Legendary Boomettes with Lee Garret from noon to 3:00 p.m. Jamboree Cruisin is free to spectators. Dances There will be a Teen Dance to benefit the Zach Rumbolz Memorial Scholarship fund on Saturday, August 5, from 9:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. at the Ver- nonia High School student parking lot. A Street Dance with music by Tommy Disco will be held Saturday night next to Vernonia Realty on Bridge Street, across the street from City Hall. Food, food, food The Sweet Adelines Pan- cake Breakfast at the Senior Center will be held on Saturday and Sunday, August 5 and 6, from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Pancakes, eggs, sausage, bacon, coffee, tea, orange juice and milk make up the menu. The price is $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for seniors and chil- dren under eight. After starting the day off right with pancakes, lunch and din- ner selections include the fa- mous Lions Club barbecued beef sandwiches served on Bridge Street across from Shay Park. Another option is the Ver- nonia Booster Club booth dur- ing the Cruisin, and the St. Mary’s Church concession booth by Hawkins Park during the Logging Show. If that’s not enough, there will also be food vendors on Adams Avenue. Horse Gaming Show The Horse Gaming Show sponsored by the Vernonia Ridge Riders, a great family event, will take place Sunday, August 6, with competition starting at 9:30 a.m. in the An- derson Park Arena. Show events include Texas Barrel, Pole Bending, Flag Race, and Obstacle Course. Participants may compete in one of five age categories; nine years and under, 10-14 years, 15-20 years, 21-45 years, or 46 years and older. A silver buckle will be awarded for High Point in each age group, and ribbons will be given up to fifth place. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The entry fee is $10 per event, $25 for all events, $45 per Ridge Rider family, and $55 for each non-member family. The family fee includes all events. Contestants must wear heeled shoes or boots. Stud horses will not be allowed to participate and no dogs are al- lowed in the arena. Camping is available. Kids’ Fishing Derby The Izaak Walton League Kids’ Fishing Derby is one of the first events to kick off the Jamboree weekend on Friday afternoon, August 4, at Vernon- ia Lake. Registration is from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., with competition from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. There is no entry fee. Children compete in a num- ber of categories, including the most fish and the largest fish. There will be trophies and rib- bons in each of the following ages groups; children five years and under, six through nine years, and 10-14 years. Crappie, blue gill and perch are the only fish eligible for this competition. Participants are expected to supply their own bait and tackle. Children five years and un- der may be assisted by an adult in baiting their hooks and/or re- moving fish from the hooks, but the children must catch their own fish. There are popsicles for all the kids afterwards. Library Book Sale The Friends of the Vernonia Public Library will hold a one day book sale on Saturday, Au- gust 5, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the store next to Crea- tures, at 736 Bridge Street. The book selection will in- clude both used paperbacks and hard covers, all at below bargain prices. Logging Show Logging show competitors will be tested on their accuracy, speed, and agility in a variety of contests during the Jamboree Logging Show on Sunday, Au- gust 6, starting at noon in Hawkins Park. Most of the par- ticipants are professional log- gers. Events include axe throw, 4-5 ci. and 5-6 ci. working saws, unlimited saws, women’s bucking, pole falling, steeple chase, pole walk and snip, and choker setting. The Vernonia show is one of four Columbia County logging competitions, and points will be accumulated toward county “Logger of the Year,” in addition to the Vernonia “All Around Logger” and the “Max Sword Sportsmanship” award winner. Kids get to participate as well, in the kids’ choker setting event, and their own axe throw competition. Women may compete in Womens’ Bucking and/or the Women’s Hard Hat Toss, or in open events. After a hot competition, the participants cool off with the water events; pole walk, boom stick run and burling, on (and sometimes in) Rock Creek. Registration will be from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. Caulk boots are required; contestants operating power saws must also wear chaps. If the sun is shining, be sure to bring water and sunscreen as the spectator area is in full sun during part of the show. prizes awarded. Parade Parade registrations will be from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. Judging starts at 9:30 a.m. with winners receiving their awards before the parade hits Bridge Street starting at 11:00 a.m. The stag- ing area is on Weed Avenue, behind City Hall. The parade ends at Bridge Street and State Avenue. A new entrant in this year’s parade will be the members of the Benson Polytechnic Honor Marching Band. The Jamboree Committee, along with the Vernonia Police Department, have decided that due to liability, insurance, and safety issues, persons 18 years of age or younger will not be permitted to ride a three wheel- er, quad, four wheeler, dirt bike, or motorcycle in the Jamboree Parade. Queen Coronation The Vernonia Jamboree queen coronation will be Au- gust 4, at 6:30 p.m. at the Scout Cabin in Hawkins Park. One of the four princesses, Sahrina Smith, Alanna Ogden, Samantha Lee, or Bekah Peer- son will be selected by the judges and crowned as the 2006 Vernonia Friendship Jam- boree Queen. See picture of princesses on page 32. Everyone is welcome to at- tend and show support for these four young ladies who have been promoting Vernonia at dozens of events this sum- mer. This is the first Jamboree Royal Court since 1994, as far as anyone can recall. Here are the members of the courts from past Jamborees, there are some gaps when in- formation is missing or there were no courts: 1958; Joyce Sullivan, Catherine Floeter, Evelyn Keyser, Mary Millis, Janice Pearson, and Queen Carolyn Garlock. 1959, for the Oregon centen- nial the court was made up of pioneer ladies; Irene Spencer, Helen Christensen, Louise Smejkal, Pauline Schmidlin, Nevada Rainwater, Alice Lindsy, Marie Christensen, Hil- da Keasey, Ella Wood, Eda Parker, and Queen Janet Bridgers. 1960, the court was made up of princes; Albert Schalock, Cass Bergerson, Robert L. Spencer, and King Oscar Shif- fer. 1962; Patty Chandler, Suze Alexander and Queen Toni Monaco. 1963; Diana Miner, Marian Mathews, and Queen Fran Dinger. 1964; Sharon Brunsman, Carolyn Krieger and Laura Floeter (Queen not listed). 1965; Claudia Carter, Nancy Skidmore, Kathy Minger, Rory Workman, and Queen Christine King.
