The INDEPENDENT, July 20, 2006 Want a salmon in your window? The Salmon Festival Com- mittee invites Vernonia busi- nesses to display decorated salmon in their windows or stores. These salmon will be judged for a “people's choice” award to be given at the up- coming Salmon Festival. This is a way to bring customers into your store and to promote the fish. On Thursday, August 10, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. there will be an “open house” to promote the salmon and the start of the voting. There will be a celebra- tion downtown that evening and the Salmon Festival and the Vernonia Area Chamber of Commerce urge participating businesses to be open during this time. There will be music and food and fun. If you would like to have a fish at your store, call Paula Hanson at 503-429-0966. It will be first come – first served until all of the fish have a home. Museum wins grant for fire system The Vernonia Pioneer Muse- um has been awarded an Ore- gon Heritage Commission grant to aid in the preservation of its textile and photographic collections. A generous dona- tion from the Mark and Helena Greathouse Family Fund will be used to enhance the muse- um’s fire detection and security systems. Mark Greathouse is a descendant of the Malmsten family, who settled in Vernonia in the late 1800s. The museum board is seek- ing a local expert for advice on the security and monitoring systems. In its place a “Wine tast- ing” experience is to be built. Donna told me the log bar was added to the restaurant in 1963, so really how long has it been there? Think of all the memories you’ll not be thinking of – the friends and friendships that have been made and The museum is open from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Donna has had the business for only four years, but has built it up and has many mixed emo- tions about moving on. One of her sons (as a small child) caught his first fish there – how about you? Will the new owner even think of keeping the pond for “Old Times’ Sake?” But, life goes on and times, they are a- changin’. I hope your 4th was a pleas- ant one. Going back a little far- ther in time – If you missed the library presentation of “The Haunting War” I’m sorry for you – It was a bit of history you don’t hear of every day and won’t learn about in school. My burn this week – five calls from a David Clark, telling me to call back with info. and he can complete my request for my mortgage loan. I finally de- cided to call and give him a piece (a small) of my mind. I don’t have a mortgage to refi- nance and a few other things. Their lousy music kept me on hold for 15 minutes so I hung up. If he calls again – I’ll try it again – It’s a toll free number. One more thing – when you hear there’s been an accident with someone injured, until you know the true facts, don’t pass any thoughts along. The per- son is alive. He was not beyond help. And – did I hear correctly? The Senior Center is to be by 2009??
