Page 22 The INDEPENDENT, June 1, 2006 Did You Know… By Chief Mathew Workman Vernonia Police Department T h e Vernonia Police Depart- m e n t hopes t h a t everyone had an enjoyable Memorial Day Holi- day weekend and was able to pay tribute to all of the men and women who gave their lives and continue to do so for our great country. The Holiday weekend was again a dangerous one on the roads. Several people were killed and several others were injured in Oregon and Wash- ington. As the weather im- proves and schools get out, we all need to be aware of the in- crease in traffic on the road- ways. There are also multiple construction projects that will either cause some delays or will cause congestion. Please use extra caution when you are driving and be aware that chil- dren or animals can appear in front of you at anytime without warning. The VPD will be doing en- hanced enforcement for seat- belts, drunk driving, as well as bicycle and crosswalk safety in the downtown area. Since it is illegal to ride bicycles on the sidewalks along Bridge St. this will increase bicycle traffic in the streets. Use caution when driving downtown with regard to bicycles and pedestrians. The VPD is participating in a “Teddy Bear/Backpack Cam- paign” for children placed in foster care, usually metham- phetamine-related. Approxi- mately 10 children per day are placed in foster care in Oregon. Drug-endangered children who are removed from homes face a double trauma in that they lose their parents and often everything they are familiar with (toys, clothing, school sup- plies) because these items are often contaminated by the drug environments. Between June 5 and June 10, state and local agencies will be accepting backpacks filled with clothing, school supplies, toys, teddy bears, or even items like diapers for younger Please see page 25 ALE WOODWORKIN D N I G.C NTA O U O General Contractor • Ponds • Site Prep • Trenching • Excavating • Indian Wells M M Service Directory C ABINET D ESIGN & M ANUFACTURING S INCE 1976 J OEL T EMPLIN 503-429-5436 CCB #43965 Office 503-429-5504 Cell 503-475-5442 V ERNONIA , O R 97064 PO.
