Disposition was by cremation. A re- ception will be held on April 23, from 2- 4:00 p.m. at the Scout Cabin. Mr. Andersen was born January 18, 1919, in Kimballton, Iowa, to Jens and Kristina Müller Andersen. He graduated from Elk Horn (Iowa) High School in 1936, then went to Chicago, where he worked to earn money for college. He attended Grand View College, in Des Moines, Iowa, graduating in 1944 with a degree in Theology. Between entering college and grad- uation, he served in the U.S. Army dur- ing World War II. He was discharged in 1942. He married Marion Peters in 1944. They later divorced. After he was ordained in the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ameri- ca, he served as pastor at churches in Yankton, S. Dakota, and Wilbur and Enumclaw, Washington. He attended the University of Washington, graduat- ing with a dual bachelor’s degree in So- ciology and Psychology. He taught at Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma, Wash., and at the University of Wash- ington while in graduate school. He also worked in the university’s depart- ment of Community Development, where he guided the economically de- pressed community of Leavenworth, Wash., through their initial develop- ment as a Bavarian village and tourist destination. In the early 1960s, Mr. Andersen moved to California, where he was a counselor at the Job Corps center in Pleasanton, then taught at Dewey High School in Oakland. He retired from teaching in 1982. He married Noni McGaugh in 1967. They moved to Vernonia, Oregon, in 1983. In 1985, they founded The IN- DEPENDENT newspaper, where he worked until his second retirement at the age of 83. Mr. Andersen was preceded in death by two brothers, Ejlif and Ver- münd, and three sisters, Helga Clausen, Karen Christiansen Trankar, and Thyra Nussle. Survivors include his wife; a son, Dirk L., of Leavenworth, Wash,; two daughters, Karen Jordan of Sno- homish, Wash., and Vicki Crosby of Sacramento, Calif.; three stepsons, Steve McGaugh of Clovis, Calif., Michael McGaugh of Kingsburg, Calif., and Clark McGaugh of Vernonia; a stepdaughter, Sharon Bonn of St. He- lens; 12 grandchildren, four great- grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. FLORENCE ELIZABETH EVERS Florence Elizabeth Evers, 90, For- est Grove, died March 29, 2006.A fu- neral mass was held at St. Anthony Catholic Church with interment in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery in Roy. Mrs. Evers was born September 22, 1915, in Banks, to Theodore and Mar- garet VanDomelen Vanderzanden. She attended St. Francis of Assisi Grade School in Roy through the eighth grade. She moved to Portland when she was 17 and worked as an in-home cook, then later worked at Nicola Furni- ture Company and, during World War II, worked on an assembly line at Willamette Iron Works. In 1944, she marred Adelbert “Del” Evers. They made their home in Forest Grove. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, Herman Van- derzanden; two sisters, Lauretta Her- mans and Rose Meeuwsen; and a step-brother, Fritz Delplanche. Survivors include four sons, Ronald Evers of Tigard, Melvin Evers and Ed- mond Evers, both of Hillsboro, and Wayne Evers of Rainier; one brother, Paul Vanderzanden of North Plains; nine grandchildren; three step-grand- children; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Duyck and VanDeHey Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. JOANNE HELZER-HUME Joanne Helzer-Hume, 59, longtime resident of Scappoose, Goble and Deer Island, died March 25, 2006. A celebration of life was held March 30 at Bethany Lutheran in Warren. Ms. Helzer-Hume was born October 30, 1946, in Portland, to Archibald Gardner and Luella and William Hol- comb. Her maiden name was Gardner. She was a school bus driver for St. He- lens, Rainier, and Banks. She was preceded in death by her father, Archibald Gardner, and two hus- bands. Survivors include two sons, Kevin Helzer of Portland, and Stephen Helzer of Newberg; a step-son, John Helzer; a step-daughter, Linda Simmons; four brothers, Carey, Rick, Ron, and Brian; three sisters, Blanche, Kimberly, and Sheri; 12 grandchildren; and one great- grandchild. WILLIAM ALFRED LARSON William Alfred Larson, 88, McMin- nville, died March 27, 2006. Private in- terment at Fish Hawk Cemetery in Ves- per has taken place. Mr. Larson was born February 3, 1918, in Vesper, to William Howard and Grace Berg Larson. He was raised in Vesper and logged there. In 1942, he married Ruth Boeck. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1951, he moved to Orenco and worked as the golf course superin- tendent at Orenco Golf Course from 1960 until his retirement in 1982. He married Iola Anderson in 1982. They made their home in Bandon. He worked at the Bandon Golf Course for several years, later moving to Wood- burn, then to McMinnville in 2004. He was preceded in death by both his wives; a brother, LeRoy Larson; and two sisters, Hazel Johnson and Faye Hovey. Survivors include a son, Larry of McMinnville; a daughter, Linnea Ed- wards of Wilsonville; and three sisters, Betty Spencer of Centralia, Washing- ton, Doris Price of Clatskanie, and Rose Heikkila of Nehalem Valley. Macy and Son Funeral Directors of McMinnville was in charge of arrange- ments. AGNES MARIE LONG Agnes Marie Long, 88, Vernonia, died April 7, 2006. No services will be held. Mrs. Long was born March 9, 1918, in Mt. Pleasant Township, Pennsylva- nia. Her maiden name was Howard. In 1946, she married Paul William Long. She lived in Banks for 20 years before moving to Vernonia four years ago. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Wayne Howard and John Ed- ward Howard. Survivors include one son, Dean of Hillsboro; two daughters, Joann Glass of Vernonia, and Ruth Chuprinko of Vancouver, Washington; two sisters, Katherine Lohr of Normalville, Penn., and Ruth Tinkey of Mt. PERDUE Cynthia L. “Cindy” Perdue, 53, Cen- tral Point, died March 13, 2006. Funer- al services were held March 15, at Memory Gardens Mortuary in Medford. Interment was in Memory Gardens Memorial Park. Mrs. Perdue was born February 12, 1953, in Hillsboro, to Lloyd and Sally Fellas. She was raised in Banks, grad- uating from Banks High School in 1971. She earned a bachelor’s degree in ed- ucation from Southern Oregon College. In 1975, she married Bill G. Perdue. She had been a substitute English teacher and retired as a manager of K- Mart before working as a payroll ac- countant for American Linen for the last 11 years. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Andrea Megan Perdue of Medford, and Kara Michell Perdue of Central Point; her parents of Banks; a brother, Cecil Fellas of Portland; and a sister, Joan Smith of Gresham.
