The INDEPENDENT, February 16, 2006 Hands on Art offering workshops Learn to paint a watercolor, create a stepping stone or techniques to cope with life changes. Vernonia Hands On Art will be hosting eight work- shops February through May. Kimberlee Weisker, a water- color artist and teacher, will of- fer the first course, February 25, with an Introduction to Wa- tercolor. This class will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Vernonia Community Church. “This is a class for be- ginning students,” Weisker ex- plained. Students, age 12 years and up, will learn how to mix paint and use water colors. Each student will complete a painting in this three hour class. The class fee is $28.00. Later in the day, a Mixed Media Madness workshop will be offered. “This is a round robin collage class. Students will explore color layering and texture through a variety of painting techniques. This is a chance to try out lots of cool art supplies, like watercolor pen- cils, radiat inks, portfolios, wa- tercolor crayons, chalks and lots more,” said Weisker. This class is also for ages 12 and up, and the fee is $28.00. For more information on these first two classes, call Get donations ready for scouts Vernonia Cub Scout Pack 201 will be canvassing town for donations on two Saturdays. On February 25, a donation bag should be placed on your doorstep. The bags are bright orange and blue with “Good Will Good Turn” written on them. During that week please fill your bag with good dona- tions that can be used by oth- ers. Large items cannot be ac- cepted. The following Saturday, March 4, the Scouts will return to collect donations. Collection will start at about 10:00 a.m. Please tie the donations bags closed and place them out ear- ly that morning. This will help prevent water damage, spilled items or animal damage. Donations this year will ben- efit the local senior center. Call Kinnell Steward at 503-429- 8133 with any questions. Weisker, who has been painting since she was 11 years old, was featured in the 2005 visual arts showcase in Beaverton, as well as the 2005 transparent watercolor show for the Oregon Watercolor So- ciety of Roseburg. Her next show is March 2-5, at South- minster Presbyterian Church, 12250 SE Denney Road, Beaverton. She has taught for 10 years and has a studio in home. She showcased and sold her art at the 2005 Ver- nonia Salmon Festival. Party changes meeting site Monthly meetings of the Constitution Party of Columbia County will now be held at the Columbia River PUD Building, on Highway 30 near Deer Is- land, at 7:00 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month. It’s just a view of myself (a senior) run- ning into sometimes little things happening in Vernonia that hits a nerve in most of the common folk who go slow enough to smell the roses or taste the cof- fee they are sipping as they go through their days. Some thought a small boy watering the park lawn should have been none of my busi- ness. Oh? It should be every- one’s business. If not, think what Jamboree weekend could be like. I still appreciate the feedback – Thank You. Don’t be fooled by the sun- shine. The lake trees started showing buds the middle of January. I fear they will suffer blossom freeze. One group The Independent forgot to mention in their “flood” issue was the Americorp Youth group (18 thru 21). They were based at the basketball camp – cooked breakfast, lunch and dinner and then delivered them hot to the Baptist Church for anyone that needed a hot meal. They also did any job they were called on to help with – from shoveling to first aid runs. A great bunch of caring youth. The fellow in charge of the Food Program was 18 years old. You want to know something instead of asking on the street, go to the source. Say like; a Senior Center meet- ing, a City Council meeting, the Vernonia Cares meeting (open to the public). I’m sure the Chamber of Commerce meet- ings would okay your being there, as well. Become involved as well as informed.
