The INDEPENDENT, December 15, 2005 Page 5 Business Notes Contest by Wauna staff to help supply Vernonia Cares Vernonia Cares serves ap- proximately 100 families in need each month with food and household items, so employees of the Wauna Federal Credit Union Vernonia branch decided to try to raise 100 each of se- lected household items. To make it even more inter- esting, Vernonia branch em- ployees are having a contest to see who can raise their house- hold items first. To help with this e ffort, bring an unopened household item (from the list below) to Wa u n a ’s Ve r n o n i a branch by December 23 and help your favorite employee win. The winner gets nothing more (or less) than bragging rights. Results of the competi- tion will be displayed in the Ver- nonia branch. ODF will meet in Forest Grove, Dec. 20 The Oregon Department of Forestry’s advisory committee for state-managed forestland in northwest and southwest Ore- gon will meet Tuesday, Dec. 20, in Forest Grove to discuss how ODF should measure its performance on forest man- agement. The meeting is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Forest Grove Community Audi- torium, 1915 Main St. Public comment periods are planned at 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The performance measure discussion will occur in the af- ternoon. In the morning, the committee will discuss accom- plishment reporting and re- ceive an update on the Harvest and Habitat Project, a comput- er-generated projection of fu- ture harvest and habitat possi- bilities. The Columbia Pacific Re- gion of U.S. Bank recently an- nounced its last round of grant- giving for 2005 by awarding a total of $7400 to seven non- profit organizations, located in cities ranging from Rockaway Beach to Astoria to Vernonia. The recipients are: a Clatsop County Wo m e n ’s Resource Center, Astoria; Lighthouse Jazz Society, Seaside; Meals for Seniors, Rock- away Beach; Seaside Kids Incorporated, Seaside; Tillamook County United Way, Tillamook; Tillamook Education Foun- dation, Tillamook; Vernonia Cares, Inc., Ve r n o n i a . “We are pleased to be able to support the missions of these organizations,” said U.S. Bank Regional President Kevin LaCoste. “As a community bank, it’s a great feeling to know we’re supporting people in the area.” U.S. Bank also extended a challenge to the businesses of Vernonia to match up to $1,000 in donations to Vernonia Cares. In Clatsop County, they will match the business communi- ty’s donations to Meals for Se- niors up to $2100, Show us you are up to the challenge, the Grant Commit- tee said, and help out worthy causes in the process!
