The INDEPENDENT, November 3, 2005 Time to herd food towards Vernonia Cares It is time, once again, to be- gin herding turkeys for the Ver- nonia Cares Christmas food boxes. There are some changes this year to help citi- zens in their donation efforts. According to Vernonia Cares Director Sandy Welch, the number of people being served by Vernonia Cares is climbing. More than 300 clients, repre- senting more than 100 house- holds, are helped each month. This number is expected to rise during the winter months, so the goal this year is to provide 150 Christmas food boxes. Between now and Thanks- giving, stores will advertise their turkey promotions. Sug- gested turkey weight for dona- tions is 10-12 pounds. Locally, turkeys or hams purchased at Vernonia Sentry Market can be donated at the checkstand. Sentry will store them to be col- lected at a later date. Saver Shield receptacles are located at each checkstand and will be used by Cares to offset the cost of the food boxes. Donors may also opt to sponsor a food box, at a cost of $20, that will in- clude a turkey or a ham. This may be done at any Sentry checkstand. Turkey and ham donations may be made at Breaktime, lo- cated at 630 Bridge St. next to Creatures, Mondays through Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., or on Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Donations may also be made at the Jazzercise evening class in the Vernonia Baptist Church, 377 A Street, Monday through Friday be- tween 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. The matched Jazzercise student donations for a total of 28 turkeys. In the spirit of friendly competition, Costley is issuing a challenge to any local busi- ness or organization to meet or beat that number this year. She weighed 7 pounds, 10 ounces and was 20-1/2 inches long. Grandparents are Bob and Doris Buchholz of Mist and Steve and Cheryl Misner of Banks.
