The meeting agenda also in- cluded two items of business. One, “Personnel Action Item – Food Service” was unanimous- ly tabled until the November 10 meeting. The second item, revising policy to move responsibility for food service to middle school administrators, was approved. Board members Randy Han- sen, Cari Levenseller, Angie Taylor, Kim Wallace and Dick Brunsman voted yes; Debbie Brown opposed the change. Board member Tim Titus was not present at this meeting. The consensus of the public present was that they are glad the board is seeking input. Joanie Jones said she’d like to see the new superintendent have more presence in Mist and the other schools, and that she’s sure the teachers here would like to see the superin- tendent walking the halls. Nate Underwood and Aaron Miller, principals at Middle School and Washington Grade School, respectively, handed out responses to a Staff Super- intendent Search Survey. On top of each list was “ability to communicate effectively” and “a leader who asks staff for ideas.” All board members present stated they would like to see a superintendent who was hon- est, communicates with every- one and will show respect to others. Board Chairman Randy Hansen ended the workshop by saying that now that they have had two public work- shops, received input from ad- ministration and staff, it is time for board members to review everything, think it over, and put it up on a board at the next meeting. The next meeting will be No- vember 10, at 6:00 p.m. in the School District office. Verizon sent a crew to patch the line shortly after being noti- fied of the break, about 5:00 p.m., Oct. 24. On the morning of Oct. 25, a subcontractor’s crew was sent to make repairs. While working with a fiberoptic “fusion splicer,” the cable broke again, according to Verizon spokesman Kevin Laverty. Asked about the “redun- dant” system, Laverty told The INDEPENDENT that it is not a separate line. It is, instead, di- versity within the fiber cable, with an electronic system that allows switching to another part of the fiberoptic. Mini- mize the risk by following the safety tips below: Avoid a Cooking Fire • Always supervise your cook- ing. • Keep an eye on oil. • Keep cooking area clean to avoid grease build-up. • Keep potholders and towels away from stovetop. • Turn pot handles toward cen- ter of stove. • Teach children to cook safely. Extinguishing a Cooking Fire If the fire is large or appears to be growing, do not attempt to extinguish it! Quickly leave your home and call 9-1-1 from a cell phone or neighbor’s home. • Put a Lid on It. Carefully slide a lid from the side of the pan over the pan and turn off the burner. The lid will “smother” the fire, while turning off the burner removes the heat. Do not move the pan until the fire is completely extinguished and the pan has cooled. • Grease and Water Do Not Mix! Never pour water on a grease fire! The flames will “splash”, resulting in burns to your body and/or catching nearby cabinets and counter- tops on fire. • Baking Soda. Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda in the palm of your hand and “toss” it upon the fire. If the fire is not extinguished after several attempts, use a fire ex- tinguisher or leave your home and call 9-1-1. Never use flour as an extinguisher, as it actual- ly feeds a fire!
