Columbia Co. Fair 4-H results continue
Hunting season woods safety tip
Following are partial results
from the 4-H competition at the
Columbia County Fair. Due to
space limitations, only results
within The Independent’s circu-
lation area are included. More
results will be published in the
September 15 issue of The In-
dependent.
“As the traditional start of the
fall hunting season, September
is a good time to remind every-
one to be safe in the woods,”
said Oregon Department of
Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) Edu-
cation Services Section Man-
ager Kenn Condon.
The best way for hunters
and non-hunters alike to stay
safe when in areas where hunt-
ing is occurring is to wear blaze
orange, noted Condon.
“It’s a highly visible color that
stands out among the greens
and browns of nature,” said

Condon. ODFW encourages
the use of blaze orange as a
standard safety measure dur-
ing hunting seasons.
“Oregon’s hunters have a
very good safety record, and
we want to keep it that way,”
said Condon. “Even one fatality
is too much.”
Last year there was one
hunting fatality in Oregon. One
hunting fatality occurred in
2003, three in 2002, three in
2001 and two in 2000, accord-
ing to Oregon State Police re-
ports.
