The INDEPENDENT, August 4, 2005 Community Reminder: Dial a Ride in Vernonia Columbia County residents are reminded that they may call 1-888-462-6526 to schedule Door-to-Door/Dial a Ride serv- ice in Scappoose, Rainier, St. Helens, Clatskanie, Columbia and Vernonia. Bus service is also available six times daily from St. Helens to the Portland Transit Mall, with stops at the Medical Mall in St Helens, Safeway in St. Helens, Chinook Plaza in Scappoose, Fred Meyer in Scappoose, and at NW Fifth and Hoyt in Portland. Should there be a Queen’s court and/or a King’s court for the upcoming 50th anniversary Vernonia Friendship Jamboree in 2006? The Festival Committee is seeking teenagers interested in helping to develop such a pro- gram, along with adults inter- ested in being chaperones and advisors. There will be a sign-up sheet and more information at the Vernonia Friendship Jamboree Variety Show, Dance and 50th official kickoff ceremony at the Vernonia Grange Hall, 457 North St., on August 7. Yes, Necia DeWitt yodeled her way into the hearts of the judges at the crowning of this year’s Columbia County Fair Senior Queen. We are all proud of her as she brought home the Queen’s scepter as the 2005 Senior Queen repre- senting Vernonia!! Good job, Necia. Thank you to Bill James for being her escort at the fair and for transporting her to all the parades and other places the senior queen is expected to be! And for those of you that want to hear Necia and her ren- dition of I Want to be a Cow- boy’s Sweetheart , come on down on Wednesdays. WE NEED THRIFT SHOP VOLUNTEERS. If you can help, please come in and see our President, Bill James. Thank you to all the seniors who showed up at the recent council meeting letting the city manager and council members know that we really do want a new center. We are still offering foot care here at the center – Foot care by Judy. She comes in two times a month now so call my office to sign up. We appreciate a donation of $15 and she does a great job. The Sweet Adelines will be here Saturday and Sunday to serve breakfast from 7:00 a.m. to noon for Jamboree week- end. They do a great job; come on in.
