The INDEPENDENT, August 4, 2005 Page 11 Vernonia Cares 5K Fun Run/Walk Baseball team finishes fourth The Vernonia Junior Nation- al Baseball team followed up their fourth place finish in the Banks tournament with a sec- ond place trophy in the Hills- boro tournament. The Hillsboro games, delayed by rain, took place on July 21. Vernonia played Farmington View in the Championship game to take second in the tournament. The team was tied for fourth place after the final tourna- ment, leaving them one place away from going to State. Bet- ter luck next year, team. Don’t miss the Parade on Saturday, August 6 at 11 a.m. Sam Thornton, winner of the 2004 1-mile fun run, on his way to victory with Vernonia Lake in the background. Vernonia Cares, your local food bank, is having their 3rd Annual 5K Fun Run/Walk on August 20. Race registration starts at 8:00 a.m. at the Amer- ican Legion Building, 627 Adams Street. Tuality Healthcare will be the title sponsor this year and Kei- th Brown, Tuality Healthcare Foundation Chairman, will be leading the runners from An- derson Park, beginning at 9:00 a.m. Brown will also serve as emcee for the event. He will be presenting winner ribbons as well as announcing the raffle prizes. Raffle tickets are being sold by Vernonia Cares Board Members at 3 for $1.00 or they can be purchased before the race. Individual registrations are $15.00 and groups of two or more are $30.00. Runners are encouraged to donate two cans of food for the food bank. Early registration has a bonus; participants who regis- ter by August 6 will receive a free T-shirt (maximum of two T-shirts per larger group). “Come join the fun! There will be serious runners and stroll- along walkers, so come and join the festivities,” encouraged race director Terry Grosnick. “It’s a great way to spend the day with friends and family.” Also, look for the Cares Clown at Jamboree, August 6th! She will be giving away FREE balloons, selling raffle tickets and accepting race reg- istrations. Can you “Dare to Care”? A youngster gets to try on a firefighter helmet and truck for size during National Night Out on August 2, put together by the Vernonia Police Department. There was free barbecued chicken, burgers and hot dogs, along with many, many prizes donated by local businesses. Personnel from the police de- partment, Vernonia Rural Fire Protection District, Metro West Ambulance and the Red Cross were on hand with informa- tion. Demonstrations and equipment offered a close up look at the different agencies services. The idea of the Night Out is for communities to join together in a stand against crime. 1969-71 classes looking for classmates A reunion for the Vernonia High School classes of 1969, 1970 and 1971 is scheduled for September 17. The reunion is open to anyone who attended school with these classes any time from Kindergarten through Grade 12. Deadline for registration is August 30.
