Gwin selected for wrestling award Travis Gwin of Vernonia has been selected for a 2005 Ore gon Wrestling Classic Schol- ar/Athlete Award. Gwin, who finished high school with a 3.2 grade point average, is the son of Darrell and Judi Gwin. A three-time state wrestling finalist with a championship in 2004, Gwin recently returned from Japan, where he was on a wrestling cultural exchange team. He has worked as a PTA volunteer as well as at wrestl ing camp and outdoor school. Gwin plans to attend either Southern Oregon University or Pacific University. The award is based on a point system involving wrestling, scholastic and other activities. The grant amount awarded is given directly to col lege wrestling programs. rixey wins Wauna FCU scholarship Wauna Federal Credit Union has announced the 2005 recip ients of $1,000 scholarships. The Vernonia High School honoree is Kerstin Brixey, the daughter of Raymond and Tory Brixey, who plans to attend Eastern Oregon University in La Grande. Her major will be Education with a minor in So cial Services. The Vernonia Junior National Baseball Team took home a fourth place trophy during the Banks Junior National Tournament held June 18 and 19. The team plays through July on Tuesday evenings at home and on Thursday evenings away. The team has dedicated this season to Max White, a true base ball fan. WGS student wins poster contest Madeline O’Leary, a fourth grader at Washington Grade School in Vernonia, and Brian- na Hill, a fifth grader at Hudson Park Grade School in Rainier, are the winners of the 2005 Conservation Poster Contest sponsored by the Columbia Soil and Water Conservation District (CSWCD). The stu dents each won $50.00 and a certificate. Columbia County students from kindergarten through 12th grade were invited to partici pate in the contest; everyone who entered received a certifi cate. This year’s posters, with the theme of “Celebrating Con servation,” will be on display at the CSWCD booth at the Co lumbia County Fair in July.
