Hwy. 47 work will again cause delays
Starting June 1, Apply-A-
Line Inc., under contract to the
Oregon Department of Trans­
portation (ODOT) will begin in­
stalling durable pavement
markings (striping) on Highway
47 from the north side of Ver­
nonia to the U.S. 26 junction.
ODF projects will limit access to
Lost Lake, Spruce Run Campground
This is one of the final steps
of the paving project completed
earlier this year. Weather per­
mitting, the contractor plans to
work Monday through Saturday
from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for
approximately 4 weeks.
The contractor will start in
Vernonia and continue south to
U.S. 26 during this month-long
project. *
In order to reduce traffic de­
lays, striping will occur in 1/2 -1
mile sections at a time. In ac­
tive construction zones, traffic
will be reduced to one lane with
flaggers controlling both direc­
tions of travel. A pilot car will be
used to safely move motorists
through the work zc?** Fxpect
delays of up to 10 minutes dur­
ing work hours. Traffic will be
restored to one lane in each di­
rection during non-work hours.
For safety, when entering
the highway within a work area,
wait for the pilot car in order to
travel in the desired direction. It
is essential to wait for the pilot
car to avoid an unsafe situation
to workers and other motorists.
Use caution and drive safely
during the construction.
Public access to a favorite
recreation area - Lost Lake
and Henry Rierson Spruce Run
Campground - will be nega­
tively impacted for three years
by road construction and log
hauling, according to the Ore­
gon Department of Forestry
(ODF).
Road projects, timber har­
vesting and log hauling will
cause intermittent delays and
road closures for the next few
years, through October 2008.
Forest management activities
are planned for portions of the
Lost Lake-August Fire forest
road system between Lower
Nehalem Road (near Henry Ri­
erson Spruce Run Camp­
ground) and U.S. Highway 26
(near mile post 27 at the Quartz
Creek forest road).
Road projects designed *o
improve vehicle access and
safety in the area are sched­
uled annually from May 1 to
October 31.
Log hauling will occur
throughout the year. The loca­
tion, direction and timing of
hauling operations will be west
via Lost Lake Road in the win­
ter, and east via August Fire
Road/Quartz Creek Road year-
round. All operations are wea­
ther dependent.
Driving conditions during
these time periods will be ex­
tremely hazardous and drivers
should be alert for heavy equip­
ment and truck traffic at all
times. Drivers are encouraged
to drive slowly and monitor
posted Citizens Band radio
channels and all road signs.

County will charge inmates for
room, board and materials used
Inmates sentenced to the
Columbia County Jail will now
have to pay for their sojourn in
the slammer.
The Columbia County Sher­
iff’s Office has received ap­
proval from the Board of Com­
missioners to charge all sen­
tenced inmates for items and
services that are provided
while they are incarcerated in
the Columbia County Jail, as
authorized by state law.
When an inmate is released
from the jail, he or she will re­
ceive a bill with a boarding fee
of $10 per day. Other items will
include a hygiene kit at $2.15
and a $1.00 Inmate ID card.
There will be charges for hair
cuts, medical/nurse visits, re­
placement ID Cards, razors,
and copies of legal materials.
All over-the-counter medica­
tions, as well as prescription
medications, will be billed to
the inmate’s commissary ac­
count.
The inmate will have 30
days after release to pay the
bill or set up a payment plan. If
no payment is received within
30 days, the account will be
turned over to a collection
agency.
