The INDEPENDENT, January 6, 2005 Page 11 Lions Club gives Xmas donations In the holiday spirit, the Li ons Club made donations to three local nonprofit organiza tions in December — Vernonia Head Start, Toy & Joy, and Ver nonia Cares. The Lions mission is to serve the community, which they do in many ways. Their ef forts include helping to provide glasses and hearing aids for those who cannot afford them, and screening for sight, hear ing, diabetes, and blood pres sure. They also sponsor the Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Venture Scouts. Lions mem bers build projects like the gazebo in Hawkins Park and are spearheading the Skate board Park project. Below, Mary Tolonen and Bridger Steward worked to gether at Vernonia True Val ue to give away Holiday Bucks certificates to Joe Kim, Pam Smith and Mar garet Brown. The world’s largest Christ mas stocking at Vernonia Hard ware was won by Kara Christie of Vernonia in a drawing held on Monday, December 20, 2004. Vernonia Rural Fire Pro tection District Chief Paul Epler above (right) drew the winning entry. Kara and her sister, Kristen, both get to enjoy the large se lection of toys and games in cluded in the stocking. Vernonia Hardware also do nated a second stocking to the Vernonia Toy & Joy program. The winners of the $25 certificates were Kim Tierney, Marie Krahn and Sue Wren.
