How to make holidays safe for pets With the holiday season just around the corner, here are some tips for making the holi days safe for pets. # Hang breakable and small ornaments or tinsel out of dog or cat’s reach. # Do not place food gifts un der the tree or popcorn garland on the tree. # Do not allow birds near the tree. They have been known to bite into tree light cords and electrocute them selves. # Do not put chemicals in the tree water if pets may be able to drink from the container. # Be sure all candles are out of the way of dog tails and the reach of cats. Never use scented candles in the same room with a parrot. The fumes can kill them. # Secure garbage so dogs cannot get into any harmful items. $ Do not give any animal or bird chocolate. It can cause seizures and death in large amounts. # No alcohol or carbonated beverages, either. Birds cannot ‘burp’ so bubbles may cause death. The best treat for pets is ex tra attention and love. Keep pets safe and everyone will have a better holiday season. Bits & Bitas By Jacqueline Ramsay A beautiful Sunday H a l lo w e e n a fte r noon. S hadow s a y s w a lk . What a find at the lake. Two adult eagles performed for over an hour. Swooping, gliding, div ing, scaring the ducks and fish. A sight not all towns are privy to. Are you used to the fall weather yet? No? I’m afraid this is Bite week. The sun must have had the af fect of the full moon syndrome on people this month. Nov. 3, noon, after lunch, Senior Cen ter parking lot. The Center had received many, many boxes of oranges. OK. We all know the foods are not Grade A #1 stock, but the oranges were good - just had marred and scruffy looking rinds. I bought a box myself. That is all but one young man. He was walking (ho ho) on the outside of the fence that was constructed at much cost to keep him safe while walking home. Yes, I complained to the Chief. If a city cares about safe ty why should this pass as an OK sport? Lastly, now that the main street is nice and smooth and we don’t have to crowd the center of the intersection at the light to miss pot holes and stuff - so why do out-going cars have to cut off the incoming straight up Rose traffic from their proper stop line? Traffic coming into town should have the right to come to their stop line so they can see the inter section, not be stopped 12” to 18” back to miss being hit by left turning cars. Right? OK, I had a bad hair day or two so forgive me please, but that intersection’s going to get someone if people don’t stop turning too soon. 23 days until the Christmas Bazaars in Vernonia. That means just 45 days to Christ mas. We all survived the elec tions. There will be new faces in the City Council in January. Your New Year’s resolution? Think about it. I will start attending Council meeting in 2005 to keep in formed and to support my town’s goals. T h is Y e a r Give a Gift Subscription to INDEPENDENT Only $15.00 per year.
