Page 4 The INDEPENDENT, September 16, 2004 Transfer station remains open…for now The Vernonia City Council chamber was packed, Septem- ber 7, because of a proposal by Waste Management that the Vernonia Transfer Station be closed on October 31. Dan Wilson, of Waste Man- agement, presented the com- pany’s decision to close the transfer station as a financial one and said that Waste Man- agement was losing $1,000 every day the transfer station is open. (The transfer station is open two days per month.) When some members of the audience questioned the ac- counting because the transfer station does not count vehicles or give receipts, it was ex- plained that the figure came from the amount Waste Man- agement pays (tonnage fees) to dispose of the refuse. The numbers indicated that transfer station rates would have to increase between $10 and $19 in order for Waste Management to make money. Curbside garbage service will not be affected and recycling service will still be provided re- United Way starts 2004-05 Campaign gardless of what happens with the transfer stations.
