Page 24 The INDEPENDENT, August 5, 2004 Boy Scout Troop #201 looking for few (or more) good boys and a new Scoutmaster When you think of Boy Scouts, do you think of camp- ing, hiking, flag carrying, and community service? Those are good thoughts! There’s more to the Boy Scouts than this! Scouting was originated by Lord Robert Baden-Powell as a way to help train young men. He believed in learning by do- ing and having adventures. The scouts now call this “Fun with a purpose.” Last month a group of scouts from Vernonia went to Camp Lassen in Northern Cali- fornia and spent the week. They hiked, swam, rowed boats, slept in tents and ate food in a dining hall. The trip to Camp Lassen was the last one for outgoing Scoutmaster Rob Clines, who has moved to Cali- fornia to pursue his education. Troop 201 is very active, with about 12 boys registered, and more are definitely wel- come. The troop meets each Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the Scout Cabin in Hawkins Park, except in August, when there will be no meetings. So, if you have a son who is between the ages of 11 and 17, we would love to talk with you and him about joining the troop. We also have many active adults; in fact, all the boys in the troop have at least one par- ent willing to take an active role within the troop. However, we do not have a replacement for the position of scoutmaster. This position takes a good deal of time, and some vision as to where the troop is heading. The Scoutmaster is a guide and mentor for the boys. He/she helps plan meetings and cam- pouts and helps the boys plan the program. We are looking for someone with good moral char- acter, good organizational skills and energy. This person could be a man or woman of any age or religion. A background in scouting would be helpful, but is NOT necessary as long as the person is open to learning the scouts rules and methods. This person would NOT have to go on all campouts. A back- ground check will be conducted on anyone who applies for this position. Please consider help- ing us grow the next generation of young men in Vernonia.
