Page 4 The INDEPENDENT, June 17, 2004 Business Notes Century-old barn is in use again as part of Farmwoman’s Nursery That beautiful old barn we’ve all admired on N. Mist Drive (Hwy. 47) in Vernonia, is once again part of a working opera- tion. Now, however, instead of being a key part of a dairy, it is part of a retail nursery and gift shop. Lorna Poetter started Farm- woman’s Nursery at the fami- ly’s Keasey Road property, then bought the barn, which was part of the pioneer Malmsten homestead, to devel- op a location that is easily accessible to more people. A lot of hard work was need- ed to modernize the interior without compromising the rustic charm of the 100-year-old barn. Much of the original rough- hewn interior has simply been cleaned up, including a major part of the old plank flooring. Sudden Oak Death, a plant disease that has caused some nurseries to be quarantined, is not a problem for Farmwo- man’s Nursery. Many of the plants and trees available at the nursery are grown by Poetter at their Keasey home, both outdoors and in green- houses, and she does not buy any nursery stock from areas where the plant disease has been detected. Landscape areas around the barn are still being developed, but every visit provides a look at something new – a shade garden, sedum displays, pond plants – or a new way to look at old familiar plants. The gift shop is stocked with Do you want a World Class Speedway in Scappoose?
