Page 28 The INDEPENDENT, June 17, 2004 The Dead helps stock local food banks at Columbia Meadows show The Conscious Alliance and The Dead will stage a large- scale food drive this summer, in conjunction with the Wave That Flag Tour. Food donations from the July 2 Columbia Meadows concert will benefit Columbia Pacific Food Bank, which pro- vides food to Vernonia Cares and other emergency pantries, group homes, senior centers and helping programs through- out Columbia County. At every concert this sum- mer, the first 1,000 people to donate ten non-perishable items will receive a free limited edition commemorative poster designed by famed Grateful Dead artist, Stanley Mouse. Donation bins will be located outside of all main entrances at Columbia Meadows. Here a volunteer will exchange a poster redemption coupon for your donation of one non-per- ishable item. Posters can be re- deemed at the Conscious Al- liance booth inside the show. The food drive will start two hours before doors open and end at the beginning of the first set. Donations of low-sodium Only the Best for Dad! and health food-oriented prod- ucts are especially encour- aged. “We are delighted to partner with the Conscious Alliance on this project and increase the amount of food,” said Columbia Pacific Food Bank director Tra- cie Smith, “to provide our mem- ber agencies, as well as raise the profile of hunger alleviation programs in our community.” The Conscious Alliance is a grass-roots 501(c)(3) non-profit based in Boulder, Colo., that is working to help feed the hungry across the United States. The approach involves staging food drives to redirect the abun- dance and generosity that ex- ists in music, art, and athletic communities. The plans are to continue running food drives until a million pounds of food have been collected and, from there, a million pounds of dona- tions per year.
