The INDEPENDENT, June 17, 2004 Community Hero Awards North Plains sophomore wins financial essay contest Essays about financial savvy earned prize money for two high school students this week from the Division of Fi- nance and Corporate Securi- ties (DFCS) of the Oregon De- partment of Consumer and Business Services. First place winner Jessica Mannen, North Plains, is 17 and a sophomore. She won a check for $1,000 to use in any wa she chooses. Second place winner of a check for $500 was Kelliann Wright, Hillsboro, also 17 and a junior. “We were pleased with the Three young Vernonians were honored as Community Heroes at Washington Grade School on June 8. The Com- munity Heroes Awards is a new program of the Vernonia Volun- teer Emergency Services As- sociation (VVESA), which in- cludes volunteer EMTs and Firefighters in the community. The Community Heroes pro- gram is designed to give recog- nition to young people who take the time to get involved when someone is in need of help. The award is a framed certificate of acknowledgement for behavior that exemplifies safety, bravery and the caring of another human life. The awards were presented to Sierra and Brittanie Roberts for knowledge and composure shown when a sibling received a severe cut on the foot. One sister applied pressure to con- trol bleeding with a towel while the other called 9-1-1. They also packed a bag and were ready for transport when the paramedics arrived. The re- sponding Paramedic said “I was very impressed with their family and the calm actions of the children.” The other award went to Ki- effer Paragon for recognizing an emergency, then running for assistance and having some- one call 9-1-1. This occurred when the Washington Grade School Principal, Nate Under- wood, accidentally swallowed a piece of candy and was chok- ing. Both Mr. Underwood and the Roberts’ child are fine now. By presenting these awards, the VVESA hopes that others will be encouraged to recog- nize emergencies and activate the 9-1-1 emergency systems. Knowledge about finan- cial matters is important to everyone, and the earlier that students think about and learn about finances, the better their lives can be. Our congratula- tions to the students, their schools, and their parents for teaching these young people well.” The essay contest, “Test Your Financial IQ,” was an out- reach effort of DFCS’ Investor Information Program. 70 en- tries were received and judged on originality, practicality, re- search, clarity, presentation, and grammar.
