Page 4 The INDEPENDENT, June 3, 2004 Business Notes Bridge, culvert repairs will close Glencoe and Gales Creek roads Event for L&C Bridge project completion Major construction on the Lewis and Clark Bridge (Long- view/Rainier Bridge) deck re- placement project will be com- pleted this month, announced the Washington State Depart- ment of Transportation (WS- DOT). To help celebrate, WSDOT and the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) will host a special event at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 15 at Riverfront Park in Rainier. The event is open to the public and will feature speakers from both states including WSDOT Sec- retary Doug MacDonald, ODOT Region 1 Area Manager Charlie Sciscione, Rainier May- or Jerry Cole and Port of Longview Commissioner and Rainier businessman Larry Lar- son. The brief speeches will high- light both the challenges faced and the innovative techniques used to design and build the project. A short video showing an actual deck panel replace- ment on the bridge will be avail- able for viewing throughout the event, and information about various aspects of the project will be on display. Commemorative boxes con- taining concrete from the origi- nal bridge deck, first built in 1930, will be given out to the first 100 event attendees. State highway maps from Ore- gon and Washington, balloons for the kids and other goodies also will be available. Construction on the project began in January 2003, and will be functionally complete in June – six months ahead of schedule. The last night of sin- gle lane closures won't be known for certain until about a week ahead of time, but is esti- mated to be in mid-June. The project replaced the bridge’s 103 concrete deck panels, replaced the existing 3- foot wide sidewalks with 5-foot wide shoulders, smoothed out the dip on the Oregon side of the bridge, widened the Wash- ington approach, improved lighting and guardrails and im- proved the bridge’s ability to withstand an earthquake. This project will extend the life of the 74-year-old bridge by another 25 years. For more information, visit the Web page: <http://www.ws dot.wa.gov/projects/lewisclark bridge>. Glencoe Road will be closed between Evergreen and Scotch Church roads from June 14 through June 18 for bridge repairs, which will in- clude grinding down the exist- ing pavement surface and repaving. The Washington County De- partment of Land Use and Transportation advises mo- torists to use alternate routes, such as Jackson School Road for cars and Shute Road for trucks. Gales Creek Road will also be closed, between David Hill and Roderick roads, from June More hands are needed to put on a great 2004 Vernonia Friendship Jamboree Please attend June 10, 6:30 p.m. at Leonetti’s Pizza and June 24, 6:30 p.m. at the Buckhorn Restaurant Community Calendar VERNONIA Alcoholics Anonymous Mondays 6:30 p.m., Head Start Bldg.
