The INDEPENDENT, May 20, 2004 Bits & Bites By Jacqueline Ramsay Dorothy, didn’t y o u k n o w t h a t Stoney P o i n t Road is in Not Kansas? Anyway, your house does look neat the way you dumped it. A good conversation piece. You can see more of the Old Mill since they bulldozed out more of the berries around the lake. I still pray they are plan- ning a play area among that group of trees left standing. If not – think about it, folks. Shadow is having a ball scout- ing out smells of who knows what in all that dirt and dug up plant life. I notice lots of folks are exploring the now accessi- ble parts of the mill you could- n’t see before. I do hope they realize if they stumble and get hurt it’s their fault – Park folks maybe should put up “no fault fall” signs. Going to Mist I had to stop for the county boys – cutting down overhanging trees from the high banks. Thank you – There are a lot more I can point out to you. Enjoy the delays on our city streets. We will miss all those friendly folks when their job is finished, but not all the noise. Whee – it sure breaks into your concentration. Oh yes – for those following my shopping saga. I went to the Dress Barn in Seaside. No blouses like I wanted but after one hour of looking I did buy a couple of sheer Big Shirt blous- es. I guess I’m doomed to buy yardage and make what I want. Oh dear. I do hope you voted for 9-1- 1. And, by the way – It is anatomically impossible for a person to lick his own elbow. Mullins has directed Douglas Lorain, the author of Backpacking Oregon, Back- packing Washington, and other books, will show slides and tell stories from his new book — 100 Classic Hikes in Oregon, an all-color photography guide to the best hikes in every cor- ner of the Beaver State — on Tuesday, May 25, 7:00 p.m. at Columbia Center in St. Helens. If you’re looking for ideas on where to hit the trails with a vir- tual guarantee of great scenery and having a terrific time, then this is the book and the evening for you. Lorain began hiking at an early age, and has hiked al- most 17,000 miles in his home state of Oregon, plus about 13,000 miles in other states and Canadian provinces. Over time, he has been charged by a grizzly bear, stared down a mountain lion, been bitten by a rattlesnake, was shot at once by a hunter, nearly washed away attempting river fords, and served as lunch for count- less thousands of mosquitoes and ticks. He has also seen some of the most beautiful scenery on Earth. According to Lorain, his fa- vorite quote was written by an anonymous person in a climbers’ register on a peak in Nevada. It read simply: “I’ll hire this God. I like His work.” Columbia Center is located at 375 S. 18th St. in St. Helens.
