Page 16 The INDEPENDENT, March 18, 2004 CARL J. ANDERSEN Carl J. Andersen, 91, Beaverton, died March 2, 2004. Mr Andersen was born July 12, 1912, in Hawley, Minn. He was two when the family moved to North Plains, where he was raised. In 1940, he married Sylvia Duyck. They operated lumber and recreational vehicle businesses. He was preceded in death by his wife and a son, Carl, Jr. Survivors include his daughter, Marilyn Issac of Tigard; sister, Edith Pruitt of Tillamook, two sisters-in-law, Rita Hermens and Dorothy Duyck, both of Banks; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. Remembrances are suggested to St. Vincent Hospice. Pegg, Paxson & Springer was in charge of arrangements. GEORGE WILLIAM CASON George William Cason, 76, Banks, died February 29, 2004. A Celebration of Life was held March 3. Mr. Cason was born June 5, 1927, in Caldwell, Idaho, to Plummer Frank and Fannie Irene (Griffin) Cason. When he was three, the family moved to Banks. He graduated from Banks High School in 1945. He served in the U.S. ‘ Army for two years, starting in 1950. In 1958, he married Thelma M. Graham. They made their home on part of the original Cason family farm in Banks. He raised strawberries until 1963, when he went into logging, then worked for 20 years at Carnation Pet Foods in Hillsboro, retiring in 1988. He was preceded in death by one brother, Plummer F “Jiggs" Cason, Jr., and three sisters, Faye Olson, Edna Endicott, and Frances Hudson. A gath ering was held March 8 at the Milwaukie Elks Lodge. Mr. Foster was born November 7, 1932, in Waterloo, Iowa. He moved from Vernonia to Portland in 1958 and later lived in Beaverton and Woodburn. He was a baker for Franz Bakery. Survivors include his companion, Marilyn Peterson; two daughters, Carolyn Holm and Brenda Hyde; two sons, Eugene and Bruce; brothers, Jim, Dave, and Jerry; sisters, Janiece McAnally and Neomi Meza; nine gran- children; two great-grandchildren. Crown was in charge of arrange ments. JACK RAMOND HACKSMA Jack Ramond Hacksma, 82, former ly of Vernonia, died March 12, 2004. Funeral services were held March 17 at Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home in Forest Grove, with George Goff and Pastor Grant Williams, officiating. Private interment was held at Vernonia Memorial Cemetery. Mr. Hacksma was born March 1, 1922, in Grandview, Idaho, to Jacob John and Phroney (Evens) Hacksma. He grew up in Springdale, Wash., and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. In 1961, he married Gertrude E. A memori al service was held March 12 at Old Scotch Church in Hillsboro, followed by interment at Old Scotch Cemetery. Mrs. Robb was born October 18. 1913, in Banks, to George and Emma (Paetsch) Lippert. She was raised and educated in Banks. In 1938, she married Francis William Robb. They made their home in Gaston. She worked as a photo retoucher and later at the Gaston Variety Store. She was preceded in death by her husband and two brothers, Alfred and Angel Memorials Granite Markers MARTHA ELLEN SMITH Martha Ellen Smith, 98, Forest Grove, died March 4, 2004. An informal gathering was held March 13, private burial was at Fir Lawn Cemetery. Mrs. Smith was born October 8, 1905, in Scammon, Kansas, to Carl Edward and Myrtle (Wykle) Hartman. She was raised and educated through the ninth grade in Arma. In 1925, she married William Alva Smith. During WWII, she worked in a plant producing artillery shells. They moved to Oregon in 1957. She picked fruit for nearly 30 years. She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include two sons, James and Richard, both of Buxton; two daughters, Daisy Phelen of Mariposa, Calif., Deannie Watts of Vernonia; more than 100 grandchildren and great grandchildren. ROBERT “BOB” WILEY Robert “Bob” Wiley, 80, Vernonia, died March 4, 2004. Interment was held March 11 at Willamette National Cemetery. A memorial service was held March 12 at Vernonia Community Church, with Pastor Grant Williams offi ciating. Mr. Wiley was born July 23,1923, in Rainier, to Charles E. and Mabie (Steele) Wiley. He grew up in Portland and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1943, he married Matta M. Welds. They made their home in Portland until moving to Vernonia in 1973. He was a tug boat captain for Knapton Tug Boat Company until his retirement. He was preceded in death by his wife and two brothers, Calvin and Charles. Survivors include three sons, Dennis of Banks, Percy and Clifford, both of Portland; a brother, Richard of Aloha; two grandchildren; one great grandchild. WILLIE DEAN PRUITT Willie Dean Pruitt, 56, Banks, died March 1, 2004. Services were held March 8 in Hillsboro. Mr. Pruitt was born June 16, 1947, in Cleburne, Texas, to Willie Earle and Sally Lou (Thurmond) Pruitt. He lived in Texas, Oklahoma, Roseburg, and Washington, graduating from Mt. Vernon High School in 1965. He served in the U.S. Army and was discharged in 1968. In 1969, he married Leanna J. Bell. They were later divorced. Survivors include his companion, Loretta Lewis of Banks; a daughter, Teresa Ann Russell of Eugene; three sons, Luke A. of Cornelius, Dean E. of Beaufort, S.C., and David J. of Gladstone; sisters, Ranae Naverrette of Anaheim, Calif., Janea Chilcoat of Woodburn, and Debrah Gorbett of Molalla; nine grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
