The INDEPENDENT, February 19, 2004 Page 17 Obituary CORY ROBERT KEPPLE Cory Robert Kepple, 24, Vernonia, died in an industrial accident on Febru- ary 7, 2004. Graveside services were held February 10 at Vernonia Memorial Cemetery with Pastor John Cahill, of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Mr. Kepple was born October 28, 1979, in Portland, to Terrence, Sr. and Tammy Sue (Osborne) Kepple. He grew up in Vernonia and graduated from Vernonia High School in 1998. He worked as a millwright at the Banks Lumber Company mill. Survivors include his fiancée, Amy Barton; a son, Tanner Lee; three brothers, Terrence, Jr. and Joseph, both of Gilcrest, and Brady Kusch of Beaverton. Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home in Vernonia was in charge of arrange- ments. JOSEPH WUEST, JR. Joseph Wuest, Jr., 77, Vernonia, died February 5, 2004. Funeral servic- es were held February 11 at Vernonia Community Church, with Pastors Grant Williams and John J. Cahill, officiating, followed by private interment at Ver- nonia Memorial Cemetery. Mr. Wuest was born March 22, 1926, in St. Charles, S. Dakota, to Joseph and Anna Marie (Wiest) Wuest. He grew up in St. Charles. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. In 1951, he married Agnes M. Gal- lagher. They made their home in S. Dak. until moving to Vernonia in 1956. He worked at Oregon-American Lum- ber Company until it closed. He then worked for Kaiser-Gypsum Company in St. Helens until retiring in 1991. He also owned and operated “Joe’s TV” repair business. He was preceded in death by four brothers, George, John, Ben, and Pete; one sister, Ida Hysel. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Lynette Townsend of Scap- poose, and Brenda Dean of Vernonia; two sons, Brett of Port Jefferson, N.Y., and Loren of Salem; a sister, Etta Rus- sell of Vernonia; a brother, James of Peoria, Illinois; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews. SONJA INEZ MARTIN Sonja Inez Martin, 57, Forest Grove, died January 30, 2004. A me- morial service was held February 6 at Direct Cremation $ 475 the Church of Christ in Forest Grove, with Jim Kent officiating. Mrs. Martin was born November 12, 1946, in Canon City, Colorado, to Harold and Wilma (Johnson) Wallace. When she was four, her family moved to Cornelius. She graduated from For- est Grove High School in 1965 and at- tended Pacific University. In 1974, she married Edward Curtis. They made their home in Hillsboro until moving to Vernonia in 1976 and to For- est Grove in 1979. She worked for Tek- tronix for 21 years and at Rodgers In- strument Company from 1991 until re- tiring in 2002. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Michele Martin and Kath- leen Martin, both of Forest Grove; a sis- ter, Jane Gayer of Bend; nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held February 12 at the East Hills Alliance Church in Kel- so and on February 14 in St. Louis, Missouri. Mr. Baggett was born October 5, 1954, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Phillip and Jayne Baggett. He earned a degree from Indiana University and a Masters degree from the University of Wisconsin. He worked in or organized credit unions in Mis- souri, Wisconsin and Eugene before becoming CEO at Wauna Federal Credit Union, Clatskanie, in 2002. Survivors include his wife, Xu; one "A Trusted Name in Funeral Service" step-daughter, Yuki; three brothers, Craig, James and Richard; one niece. VICTORIA MONTANA NANSON Victoria Montana Nanson, 90, for- merly of Vernonia, died February 16, 2004, in Silverton. Graveside services will be held February 21 at 10:30 a.m. at Vernonia Memorial Cemetery, with Pastor John Cahill, of the Vernonia Baptist Church, officiating. Mrs. Nanson was born November 28, 1913, in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, to George and Henrietta (Steed) Lindsay. She was raised in Montana. In 1936, she married Arthur A. Nan- son. They made their home in Mon- tana, then moved to Vernonia in 1938, Corvallis in 1957 and back to Vernonia in about 1977. She was preceded in death by her husband; seven brothers and sisters. RALPH IRWIN BORTON Ralph I. Borton, 70, Cornelius, died February 12, 2004. Services were held February 16 with Reverends Lois B. Horsley and Michael Crossman officiat- ing. Interment was at Valley Memorial Park in Hillsboro. Mr. Borton was born March 5, 1933, in Philomath, to Buddy and Wilma (Rosa) Borton. He grew up in Vernonia and served in the U.S. Air Force in the 1950s. In 1978, he married Martha J. Lewis. They lived in North Plains, For- est Grove and Cornelius. He worked in logging and construction. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ralph W. of Catron, Missouri, and John C. of Seagoville, Texas; nine grandchil- dren; four great-grandchildren. Mr. Johnston was born October 13, 1923, in Bakersfield, Calif. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 22 years includ- ing time during World War II. In 1944, he married Julia Babcock; she died in 1983. He married Dorothy L. Woodworth in 1983. He lived in For- est Grove and Hillsboro before moving to Banks in 1997. He worked in zoning and planning for Washington County. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, JoAnn McEwen and Bonnie Johnston; one son, Mike; three grand- children; three great-grandchildren. Neptune was in charge of arrange- ments.
