Page 18 The INDEPENDENT, February 5, 2004 Obituary SAMUEL T. “BUCK” HEARING Samuel Thomas Hearing, 84, Ver- nonia, died January 15, 2004. A service was held January 21 at Vernonia Community Church, with Pastor Grant Williams officiating, followed by inter- ment at Vernonia Memorial Cemetery. Mr. Hearing was born December 16, 1919, in Haines, to Samuel L. and Eva (Cook) Hearing. He graduated from Vernonia High School in 1937. In 1941, he married Alvilda George. They made their home in Vernonia. He owned and operated Sam’s Food Store in Vernonia until retiring in 1992. In addition to serving on the board of directors for West Oregon Electric Cooperative for 35 years, he was a director for the Vernonia Federal Credit Union, Vernonia School District and the Columbia County ESD, and a member of the Vernonia Budget Committee and several organizations. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Sam G. and Dan, both of Portland; two sisters, Virginia Ewart of Phoenix and Evelyn Holce of Portland; two grand- children; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, including Randy Holce of Vernonia. Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home in Vernonia was in charge of arrangements. BRUCE BERNDT Bruce Berndt, 91, Vernonia, died January 17, 2004. Services were held January 22 with Pastor Grant Williams officiating, followed by interment at Vernonia Memorial Cemetery. Mr. Berndt was born February 14, 1912, in Salem, to William and Flora (Combs) Berndt. He was raised and educated in Salem. During the depression, he worked "A Trusted Name in Funeral Service" as a groundskeeper at the Salem School for the Deaf and, later, taught agriculture classes. He also raised turkeys. After moving to Vernonia in 1944, he logged and raised cattle. He also operated an excavating company until retiring in 1982. After retiring, he devel- oped Vernonia Bonsai Nursery. In 1975, he married Juanita M. Sabilino. They made their home in Vernonia. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Berndt; six brothers and sisters. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Dan Steele of Hesperia, Calif., Deno Calhoon of Yamhill, and Doug Steele of Salem; two daughters, Mary Ann Kreel of Hope Hills, N. Carolina, and Jo Woods of Hillsboro; 12 grand- children; 18 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home in Vernonia was in charge of arrangements. EVA “JEAN” DeVANEY Eva “Jean” DeVaney, 83, Portland, died January 7, 2004. A memorial service will be held on Palm Sunday, April 4, 2004 at a place and time to be announced later. Interment was at Vernonia Memorial Cemetery. Mrs. DeVaney was born April 14, 1920, near Vernonia, to Absolem and Isabel (Hall) Counts. She was related to the Hatfields, of the famous Ken- tucky feud family. She spent her child- hood in Myrtle Creek but returned to graduate from high school in Vernonia. In 1939, she married Darrell R. DeVaney. They made their home in Vernonia and, later, in Portland. She worked for Weisfeld’s Jewelers. She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include three daughters, Kathleen Woodruff of Vernonia, Lorna Chacon of Vancouver, and Linda Capps of Long Beach, Wash. and Portland; six grandchildren; six great- grandchildren. Private interment was held. Mr. Schmidlin was born November 26, 1953, in Portland, to Harold J. and Elinor (Goble) Schmidlin. He was raised in Vernonia and graduated from Vernonia High School in 1973. He worked as a laborer in the farming industry. Survivors include two brothers, Michael of Vernonia, and Tracy Boyd of Troutdale; one sister, Lisa Hefflin of Vancouver; nieces and nephews. MOLLIE McPEAK BAILEY Mollie McPeak Bailey, 72, Pendle- ton, died December 21, 2003. Private services were held in Pendleton. Mrs. Bailey was born December 31, 1930, in Banks. She graduated from Banks High School in 1949. She married Bob Bailey and they made their home in LaGrande until 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include two daughters, Di- ana Nickleson and Brenda Bailey; one son, Tim; three brothers; four sisters. EUGENE PERRY TOWNSEND Eugene Perry Townsend, 81, Forest Grove, died January 7, 2004. Grave- side services were held January 14 at Forest View Cemetery in Forest Grove with Pastor Dale Phipps officiating. Mr. Townsend was born June 19, 1922, in St Helens, to Roy and Eliza- beth (Wymer) Townsend. He spent his early years in Vernonia then moved with his family to Forest Grove where he graduated from high school. In 1942, he married Cleo L. Fitzger- ald. They made their home in Forest Grove. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He worked as an electrician, retiring from L.A. Newton Electric. He was preceded in death by one sister and one son. Survivors include his wife; one son, Robert of Forest Grove; one daughter, Linda Crop of Forest Grove; six grand- children; nine great-grandchildren. STANLEY HOWARD SCHMIDLKOFER Stanley Howard Schmidlkofer, 77, Forest Grove, died January 13, 2004. A funeral mass was held January 17 at Visitation Catholic Church, followed by burial rites and interment at Visitation Cemetery in Verboort. Mr. Schmidlkofer was born June 5, 1926, in Banks, to Joseph and Petronella (Cropp) Schmidlkofer. He was raised in Banks, Verboort and the Hillside area. He graduated from Forest Grove High School in 1944 and served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. In 1949, he married Ann Hermens. They made their home in the Hillside area. He worked for truck companies until his retirement in 1990. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Bradley J. of Hillsboro, and John W. of Forest Grove; two daughters, Ann M. Strassel of Buxton, and Catherine Heinrich of Hillsboro; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. RICHARD BOLLE Richard Bolle, 87, Hillsboro, died January 14, 2004. Graveside inurn- ment was held January 20 at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Mr. Bolle was born October 28, 1916, in Cooks, to Henry and Nora (Larsen) Bolle. He graduated from high school in Stevenson, Wash. In 1947, he married Bea Young. They lived in Portland, Tillamook and Hillsboro. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked as a welder, and then replaced his father as manag- er of the Trask River Hatchery. He was preceded in death by his wife. Survivors include one son, Gene of Banks; two grandchildren; five great- grandchildren. Waud’s Funeral Home in Tillamook was in charge of arrangements. DARRELL E. WHITESIDE Darrell E. Whiteside, 69, Portland, died January 16, 2004. Mr. Whiteside was born August 16, 1934, in Buxton. He was raised and lived in Portland, working as a construction worker for Vans Concrete. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Terri Marks. A memorial service will be held February 6 at the McKinley Church. Mrs. Beaver was born July 25, 1909, in Illinois. Her maiden name was Wiles. She moved to Vernonia as a child and completed her education there. She married Harvey Beaver, they made their home in McKinley until 2000, when she moved to a care facili- ty in Coos Bay. She was preceded in death by her husband and two sons, Buster and Delmar. Survivors include two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Myrtle Grove Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements. ALAN L HUGHES Alan L. Hughes, 56, Forest Grove, died January 21, 2004. Mr. Hughes was born June 6, 1947. He graduated from Banks High School and served in the U.S. Army. In 1990, he married Rita A. Griffin. Survivors include his wife; a son, Clarence; two daughters, Jeanene and Anna Hughes; one brother, Lee; three sisters, Beckey Mares, Frances Hughes and Cora S. Gladney; four grandchildren. Tualatin Valley Funeral Alternatives was in charge of arrangements. BRUCE T. HOLMAN Bruce Thomas Holman, 69, Forest Grove/Timber, died January 20, 2004. No services were held. Mr. Holman was born July 10, 1934 in Vandalia, Illinois, to James T. and Mildred E. (Randolph) Holman. He was raised and educated in Ill. He served in the U.S. Navy. In 1959, he married Barbara A. Wright. Upon his discharge from the Navy in 1963, they moved to Portland, then Tigard and, in 1969, to the Forest Grove-Timber area. He worked at United Grocers until his retirement in 1993. He was preceded in death by an infant brother and one sister, Betty Thompson. Survivors include his wife; five daughters, Diana Haworth of Timber, Doris Bushar of Portland, Barbara Kirk of Llano, Texas, Christine Mackie of Bremerton, Wash., and Linda Walsch of Beaverton; one son, Alfred of Forest Grove; 11 grandchildren and four great- grandchildren. JUDY KAY ALLEN Judy Kay Allen, 60, Warren, died January 4, 2004. There will be a gathering at Beverly Beach State Park at 10:00 a.m. on March 27. Mrs. Allen was born May 27, 1943, in Portland. Her maiden name was Skillin. She was raised and educated in Portland. In 1976, she married Ray Allen. They moved to Mist in about 1987 and lived there until moving to Warren in Please see page 19
