Page 6 The INDEPENDENT, January 2, 2004 Community Planning begins for spring river rafting, and arts event A planning meeting is sched- uled on Thursday, January 8, for a Vernonia River Raft and Arts & Crafts Festival in May. Sponsored by the Vernonia Li- ons, the emphasis will be on river-related activities of vari- ous sorts, including kayak, ca- noe or rafting races, plus rub- ber ducky contests for all ages. In addition to arts and crafts, proposed activities will include a fishing tournament at Vernon- ia Lake, hay rides, a horseshoe tournament, arcade games for children and adults, a parade of homemade rafts and a home brew contest. All interested parties are in- vited to participate in the 7:00 p.m. meeting at the Buckhorn Restaurant (formerly Lew’s Place). Local non-profit organi- zations are particularly urged to get involved to see how they may join in the fun while earn- ing money for their other activi- ties. Heading up the festival committee will be Lions Vice- president Mark Hall. A portion of the proceeds from this event will go toward construction of a skate/bike park in Vernonia.
